Pedro "Pete" Arredondo, whose delayed response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, has been widely criticized resigned from his post on the city council, the local newspaper reported Saturday. Play tells story of filling in pools rather than integrating
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 11 LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — As American citizens celebrated freedom and liberty in their nation on Independence Day, 1961, a government founded on notions of the inalienable human rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness took action at a local level to deny those rights to their fellow citizens whose skin was not white. This little-taught chapter of local history is being brought to life in an original play, “Buried Deep,” produced through Endstation Theatre Company, affiliated with Randolph College. On that sweltering July day in Lynchburg, as many residents sought the relief offered by public pools, the city closed those pools down because some Black residents went to swim in the whites-only pools at Miller and Riverside parks. They were exercising their civil rights and making intentional strides toward integration and … [Read more...] about Play tells story of filling in pools rather than integrating
Dalen Terry welcomes the challenge — and support — from Patrick Williams in his 1st Chicago Bulls practice
Rookie Dalen Terry ended his first official practice as a Chicago Bull with a show of support from teammate Patrick Williams. Williams picked out the Bulls rookie as the top competitor of the practice, highlighting Terry’s energy on his first day scrimmaging against his new teammates as he prepares for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas next week. The Bulls selected Terry with the 18th pick of the draft last month. “It gave me a little bit more confidence,” Terry said. “He was here last year, he’s been through what I’ve been through. So for him to do that is definitely a nod and respect, and I appreciate him for saying that.” Williams, the Bulls’ pick at No. 4 in 2020 , provided an immediate challenge for Terry, who is relishing the chance to face off against professional players in his first days at the Advocate Center. Click here to read the full article. When the cast of “ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ” was first announced, much attention was paid to all the legacy “Trek” characters who were getting a new life on the Paramount+ series, from Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) to Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). Then there was Lt. Erica Ortegas, one of the only wholly original characters on the series, which takes place on the U.S.S. Enterprise roughly a decade before the events of the original “Star Trek” series from the 1960s. As the helmsman on the Enterprise under Capt. Pike, Lt. Ortegas — pardon the pun — flew under the radar for “Trek” fans at first. But as the series nears its Season 1 finale on July 7, Ortegas’ flirtatious wit and nerves of steel have made her a standout on the show, even as other characters have earned more of a spotlight this season.
