Amazon is once again expanding its mid-summer sales day for members of its $119-a-year Prime program. The fourth annual Prime Day, or in this case Prime Day-and-a-Half, will now extend for 36 hours, beginning at noon July 16. Only Prime members can participate, but people can sign up for membership anytime before or during the sale or opt for a 30-day free trial. The sales day began in 2015, starting as a typical 24-hour day, then expanding to 30 hours last year. Analysts estimated it brought in $1 billion for the Seattle e-commerce company in 2017. Perhaps more important than that, Amazon announced last July that the 2017 Prime Day was the single biggest day for Prime sign-ups up to that point. The program now has more than 100 million members, Amazon disclosed for the first time in April. Amazon’s Prime membership program offers two-day free shipping, access to some TV shows on its streaming service, discounts at Amazon-owned Whole Foods and a host of other perks. When Greg Greeley and his team flipped the switch on the first-ever Prime Day last year, starting in Japan, they quickly realized their idea to host a major sales event in July would pay off. "We knew immediately when we turned on Japan and saw the response from Japanese Prime members that we had hit upon something special," Greeley, the vice president of Amazon Prime worldwide, said in an interview Friday. Heading into the second annual Prime Day this Tuesday, the stakes are higher, as Amazon hopes to make this year's sale even bigger. Greeley spoke with CNET about what consumers can expect from the upcoming event, which is exclusive to its Prime members, and how Amazon made changes in response to consumer criticisms last year. "We've captured us a Dragon," Williams radioed. "Congratulations to the entire team that put this thing together, launched it and successfully rendezvoused it to the International Space Station. We look forward to the work that it brings." "Bravo zulu. That's Navy speak for well done," replied astronaut Victor Glover from mission control. "From a grateful ground team, we'd like to thank you for your hard work today and for all of your effort leading up to the capture. ... … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo SpaceX cargo ship delivers supplies to space station
By The Associated Press | PUBLISHED: March 6, 2018 at 12:42 pm | UPDATED: March 6, 2018 at 12:48 pm Target is increasing the minimum hourly pay to $12 starting this spring, the second increase in a matter of months, while accelerating its reinvention plan to make the discounter more competitive in the age of Amazon. The discounter’s moves, announced at its annual investor meeting in Minneapolis, where the company is based, come as its ambitious plan to make itself over is driving more people to its stores and its website. But the cost of such a massive overhaul, along with its pay increases, squeezed its fourth-quarter profits, and it took some shine off overall strong quarterly sales. The company also offered a muted profit outlook. In fact, shares were trading lower Tuesday on the news of muted profits before the announcement of the pay hike. And investors punished the stock further, sending shares down nearly 5 percent. Last fall, Target increased its hourly wage to $11 … [Read more...] about Target’s remake includes boosting minimum wage, more free shipping
