Art Stapleton NFL writer Published 9:02 PM EST Nov 9, 2018 EAST RUTHERFORD - The sun had barely risen and Sean Chandler was already there in the bleachers on those chilly April mornings four years ago. On the first day of spring practice, then-Temple University and now-Baylor University football coach Matt Rhule will never forget the sight of Chandler in the stands at Camden High School, nor what his presence told everyone about his commitment to the game and his team from that moment forward. Chandler had signed a letter of intent weeks earlier to attend Temple, where he would play for Rhule, yet at that time, he was still a senior at Camden two months from his high school graduation. But at 6 a.m., with Temple having to use the Camden High practice field as its own underwent renovations, there was Chandler doing some scouting for himself from the stands. Looking for an edge, the precocious teenager also left an indelible impression. "Every morning, he … [Read more...] about How NY Giants rookie Sean Chandler has defied the odds in NFL journey

‘Self-made’ Sean Chandler at home with Giants after growing up homeless in Camden
EAST RUTHERFORD -- Sean Chandler dove for the football and clutched it tight in his hands, just like the free hot dogs he used to bring home to his hungry younger sister. The rookie safety bounced up and looked to return the interception in the opposite direction, just like how he once found a path to dodge trouble on the streets of Camden. The Giants signed Chandler to their 90-man roster as an undrafted free agent, and he has quickly asserted himself in practice as a threat to steal a spot when teams cut down to 53. If those sound like long odds, consider Chandler already has survived a childhood in and out of six different homeless shelters to reach the NFL. The family sometimes moved day-to-day, and a week's stay in one place felt long. "The uncertainty of not knowing where your next meal is going to come from or where you are going to be at the next day," Chandler told NJ Advance Media, "is the hardest part." Why do Giants have so little salary cap space? When's relief … [Read more...] about ‘Self-made’ Sean Chandler at home with Giants after growing up homeless in Camden

Temple’s Sean Chandler looking to prove himself to NFL teams
Sean Chandler, like most potential picks, can’t wait until this week’s NFL draft, which will take place Thursday through Saturday. After a stellar career in which he was a four-year starter in Temple’s secondary, Chandler is projected to be a third-day choice, selected in rounds four through seven. “I am anxious,” he said by phone last week. “I would like to get this over with.” Chandler started at cornerback his first two seasons and moved to safety for the last two. He also has value as a punt returner, although he returned just two punts last season — he did average 12.1 yards on 17 returns as a sophomore. Chandler has a philosophical view even if he doesn’t get selected. “I know if I don’t get drafted, there will be teams interested in me and I will get a chance to prove myself,” he said. Chandler, who starred at Camden High, has an extremely high football IQ, and playing two positions at Temple is a … [Read more...] about Temple’s Sean Chandler looking to prove himself to NFL teams
In wake of Sean Gannon’s killing, Gov. Charlie Baker ‘supports the death penalty’ for cop killers in Massachusetts
The killing of a Massachusetts police officer has some Republicans calling for the reinstatement of the death penalty for the murder of law enforcement officers. Recent attempts to restore capital punishment in the state have faltered, most recently after the killing of another police officer two years ago and in 2013, after the Boston Marathon bombing. The death of Sean Gannon, a Yarmouth K-9 officer who was fatally shot in the head while serving an arrest warrant last Thursday, has again raised the issue. Gannon's funeral is scheduled for Wednesday. On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Republican Party sent out a message on Twitter reaffirming the party's backing of capital punishment for criminals who kill police officers. An aide to Republican Gov. Charlie Baker said he also "supports the death penalty for the offense of killing a police officer." Baker on Friday signed an overhaul of the state's criminal justice system that imposed a new mandatory minimum for assault and battery on a … [Read more...] about In wake of Sean Gannon’s killing, Gov.
