At an election forum over at Pikes Peak Community College on Thursday, we panelists asked the students attending what their biggest concern was this year. To our surprise, it wasn’t health care, or the economy, bad roads, immigration, clean energy, #MeToo or even education funding.Students said the coarsening of our civic dialogue and the scorched-earth divisiveness of our politics was their biggest concern.Interestingly, an article published in last Sunday’s New York Times wondered aloud if Colorado, and the way we practice our politics out here, might hold the answer to ending that divisiveness, and serve as a model for the way out of our uncivil state. The headline asked: “Can Colorado Save America?” Education VIDEO REPLAY: PPCC election forum aimed at younger voters around Colorado Springs The Gazette What’s different about the way we go about politics here? With the midterms just two weeks away, "Pod Save America" hosts Jon Favreau and Dan Pfeiffer say there's nothing not to worry about. The Obama administration alums-turned hit political podcast hosts joined "CBS This Morning" Tuesday to discuss the state of the Democratic Party, the midterms and whether their show – with its fair share of F-bombs and a decidedly liberal slant – contributes to the political divisiveness in our country. Asked whether the Democratic Party is going through an identity crisis, the two quickly disagreed. Though Favreau admitted there's been some "soul searching" after the 2016 election, both say Democrats are, at least, bonded by one thing: Trump. "The party is pretty united in wanting to go vote. Have a check against Donald Trump now," Favreau said. "We got a lot of things to figure out, but we're united against Trump and that's important," added Pfeiffer. While President Trump has focused on immigration issues to fire up his base in … [Read more...] about “Pod Save America” hosts say Democrats are “united against Trump”

close Video White House explores alternatives to Social Security numbers The administration is looking for ways to stop using the numbers for identification amid more hacks. President Trump discussed many important issues in his State of the Union address Tuesday, but left out one of the most important – the need for major reforms in two giant entitlement programs for senior citizens, Social Security and Medicare, that account for most mandatory federal spending. With control of both houses of Congress and the White House, Republicans have the opportunity now to make the reforms needed to prevent these two critically important programs from running out of money in the decades ahead. The Social Security Trust Fund, for example, is projected to be depleted by 2035. The Social Security Board of Trustees says that means Social Security recipients will than get only 75 percent of benefits after that unless changes are made. Republicans in Congress have shown that when … [Read more...] about It’s time for a moonshot to save America’s entitlement programs before they go broke and bankrupt us all
Donald Trump is changing the presidency in many ways, including this: From now on, presidents will have less use for traditional media than ever before. The next president may not be as dismissive of legacy media organizations as Trump is, said Dan Pfeiffer, President Barack Obama’s former communications director. He or she won’t have to be — the mainstream media will simply become less relevant. Pfeiffer, who now co-hosts “Pod Save America,” a left-leaning podcast led by former Obama administration speechwriters and operatives. says future White Houses will spend their time figuring out how to connect with voters on social media — something Trump does a dozen times or so a day on Twitter. First order of business in the new world, Pfeifer says: eliminate the job he held under Obama from 2009 to 2013. “I think we should retire the position of communications director as it currently exists,” Pfeiffer said during a conversation that was … [Read more...] about ‘Pod Save America’ host: After Trump, politics is all about social media
