Saudi Arabia’s first-ever Arab Fashion Week kicked off Tuesday, headlined by international designers Jean Paul Gaultier and Roberto Cavalli. “We are so excited today to be announcing a history and new era for the kingdom, and for the entire Arab world, which is Arab Fashion Week,” Jacob Abrian, CEO of the Arab Fashion Council, told Gulf News. Other designers and brands in attendance include cool-kid brand Opening Ceremony and local designer Arwa Banawi, whose youthful line, the Suitable Woman, has amassed 23K followers on Instagram in its three years in business. Saudi Arabia has long prohibited women — with help from “religious police” — from wearing clothing and makeup that “show off [their] beauty.” But those norms are slowly being overturned by 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who was appointed in June 2017. According to Reuters, the royal is working to update stringent dress codes. Although abayas, or full-length … [Read more...] about Inside Saudi Arabia’s first-ever fashion week
Some have tried to reconcile these findings with the late-exodus narrative by claiming there may have been an early, but ultimately doomed, first wave migration out of Africa some 120,000 years ago, after which humans more or less stayed put on the continent for another 60,000 years.M - New research suggests that modern humans were living in Saudi Arabia about 85,000 years ago, BBC reported."What we're arguing here is that there were multiple dispersals out of Africa, so the process of the movement and the colonisation of Eurasia was far more complicated than our textbooks tell us", said study co-author Michael Petraglia of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Germany. The single fossil finger bone of Homo sapiens - pictured from various angles - from the Al Wusta site, Saudi Arabia is pictured in this undated handout composite photo obtained by Reuters April 9, 2018. World Yemen Saudi Arabia Houthis The three-year war in Yemen shows no signs of ending. The conflict has so far claimed at least 10,000 lives and displaced more than 3 million people. What began as a civil war between the Yemeni government and the northern Houthi tribe has morphed into a proxy conflict in the Saudi Arabia-Iran tussle for regional dominance. A Saudi Arabian-led international coalition is now attempting to reinstall the Yemeni government and crush the Houthi rebels, who are allegedly being funded and armed by Iran. On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia said it intercepted another three Houthi ballistic missiles fired at its cities. The attack was the latest in increasingly regular strikes launched from across the border in recent months. An image taken from a video by Houthi rebels shows what appears to be a ballistic missile launch reportedly from the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, on March 25. RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi Arabia has kicked off its first-ever fashion week with designs by Middle Eastern, Brazilian, U.S. and Russian designers, as well as shows by internationally renowned labels Roberto Cavalli and Jean Paul Gaultier. In line with Saudi cultural norms and rules on gender segregation, the catwalks are open to women-only and no outside cameras are allowed to film inside.Still, the event marks the latest turnaround for a country that for decades has been ruled by ultraconservative dogma. While the kingdom has held fashion shows in the past, they have mostly been tied to charitable causes and did not include big names in the industry. The catwalks kicked off Thursday and run until Saturday, when— in another first— the fashion week will conclude with a Russian ballet performance for a women's-only audience.Copyright 2017 The Associated Press.
