People seeking housing assistance in Sarpy County could wait five years or more before they get it.The Bellevue Housing Agency, which oversees the Section 8 voucher program for Sarpy County, received more than 500 applications during its application process, which began Oct. 26. Executive Director Carolyn Pospisil said BHA only accepted applications for two hours and received more than 1,000 preliminary applications, which consisted of basic information.Those who filled out the preliminary application were sent a full application to fill out and send back to BHA. Pospisil said BHA received 521 full applications. Applicants will be placed on the list based on preference points, which rank need based on six factors that include employment, disability status or homelessness. One person was seriously injured and traffic was backed up Thursday morning after a crash on westbound Interstate 80 in Sarpy County.The crash near the Giles Road-Nebraska Highway 50 area stacked up motorists heading west around 7 a.m., Sarpy County 911 dispatchers said. Scammers trying to steal money using a couple different scams have been calling Omaha-area residents and demanding payment.The Omaha Public Power District said Tuesday that scammers have been posing as utility representatives. The utility received more than 50 reports on Tuesday alone from customers who have received such phone calls.The callers falsely tell customers their bills are overdue or that they need to purchase equipment, OPPD said. The scammers demand numbers from a payment card of some kind and threaten to disconnect service if customers don't pay quickly. The scammers have been targeting both residential and business customers.In a separate scam, someone claiming to be a Sarpy County judge is calling people to tell them they are being fined for missing jury duty or a court date.Sarpy County Sheriff's Capt. Sarpy County wants the authority to install lights at intersections on Nebraska Highway 370. But that’s not possible, says the Nebraska Department of Transportation, which controls the highway.That’s OK, said County Commissioner Jim Warren. “I think it will at least open up discussion.”Citing public safety concerns as the county grows, the Sarpy County Board approved a resolution Tuesday afternoon requesting that the state let Sarpy make decisions on the highway’s traffic lights.
