SAN FRANCISCO (CBS / AP) — Millie Hughes-Fulford, a trailblazing astronaut and scientist who became the first female payload specialist to fly in space for NASA, died following a yearslong battle with cancer, her family said. She was 75. Hughes-Fulford was selected by NASA for its astronaut program in 1983. In June 1991, she spent nine days in orbit on the shuttle Columbia, conducting experiments on the effect of space travel on humans as part of the agency’s first mission dedicated to biomedical studies, STS-40. She and her crew mates circled the Earth 146 times. The research shaped the rest of her career and upon her return she established the Hughes-Fulford Laboratory at the San Francisco VA Healthcare System, which worked to understand the mechanisms that regulate cell growth in mammals. San Francisco Public Works Director Arrested On Alleged Public Corruption Charges
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — The head of San Francisco’s Department of Public Works has been arrested on charges of public corruption, federal authorities said Tuesday. Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru, 58, was arrested Monday by FBI agents and accused of several corruption schemes involving city contracts. Businessman and restaurateur Nick Bovis, 57, owner of the famed Lefty O’Doul’s bar and restaurant, was also arrested as part of the probe. Nuru is also the Chair of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority Board of Directors, which administers the Salesforce Transit Center in San Francisco. Update: Family Travels From Chicago To Help Search For Missing San Francisco Man
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — Police in San Francisco on Friday were asking for the public’s help to locate a computer programmer who has been missing for more than a month . The man’s family is worried his disappearance could involve foul play. Family members told KPIX 5 the last known location of 50-year-old San Francisco resident Chris Woitel was his Mission District apartment. Christopher Woitel of San Francisco was last heard from on January 9, 2021. (San Francisco Police Department) Surveillance video taken from the apartment building showed Woitel entering his building and walking to his apartment with a bottle of wine on January 8th. His family members said they talked to him on January 9th. Woitel is also known to frequent the Emeryville area and the town of Sonora in the Sierra Foothills. Cameron Scott is in the spotlight after driving the truck that carried an entire 139-year-old Victorian mansion seven blocks. SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/AP) — With new cases of COVID-19 plunging, San Francisco health officials announced that the city was moving into the state’s Red Tier, allowing struggling restaurants to offer indoor dining for the first time in months.
