A shareholder for a company with an all-male board is suing California over a law that requires public companies to have women on their boards, arguing that it is unconstitutional and forces him to consider candidates based on sex. The plaintiff, Creighton Meland, is a retired corporate attorney in Illinois and current shareholder at OSI Systems. The Delaware-incorporated, California-based company designs and manufactures specialized electronic systems for the security and health-care industries, and it has a seven-person board of directors constituted solely of men. Meland is represented pro bono by the Pacific Legal Foundation, a California-based libertarian group that brings legal challenges against the government for actions it deems invasive or unconstitutional. A coalition of states led by California filed a lawsuit Friday against the Trump administration, challenging its decision to revoke a rule that empowers the state to set tougher car emissions standards than those required by the federal government.The lawsuit seeks to defend California and the 13 other states that follow its car pollution rules from the administration’s latest effort to loosen environmental regulations. It maintains that the special waiver the state has relied on for the last 50 years to set its own standards is not only lawful but essential to protecting California’s air quality and preventing the worst effects of climate change.Attorneys general from 22 other states and the District of Columbia joined the lawsuit, as did the cities of New York and Los Angeles. The team of 10- and 11-year-old were invited by Snoop Dogg to play in the Snoop Youth Football League Nationals in California, but they needed funding to get there. The financial advising company SmartAsset released its second annual study on states with the best and worst drivers this month. The study looked at four metrics: percent of drivers with insurance, number of DUIs per driver, average number of deaths per miles driven and how often residents Google terms such as traffic ticket or speeding ticket.California tied with Missouri for bad driving. Across state lines, Arizona fared a little better with an overall ranking of nine.
