When the Regional Chamber of Northeast Indiana learned about a year ago that its then-executive director, Vince Buchanan, had diverted nearly $100,000 of the organization’s money for his own purposes, he was allowed to resign quietly with the promise that the funds would be repaid, according to board members and a federal tax return.Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly recently uncovered the diversion of funds — $96,643 — in an examination of the organization’s tax return for 2016, filed in late November. The chamber answered affirmatively to the question on the form asking if the organization became aware of a significant diversion of the organization’s assets. The repayment of what is classified as a “loan” on the tax return is detailed under business transactions, noting Buchanan as the person involved in the transaction.The Regional Chamber made no other public disclosure of exactly what happened. WASHINGTON — After more than a year of silence, the Trump administration is beginning to address a backlog of petitions signed by Americans on the White House website. But the White House is ducking a high-profile petition calling on President Donald Trump to release his tax returns. That petition attracted more than 1.1 million signatures. The White House said the tax-return question "is not within the scope" of the government feedback tool because the issue "does not address an action or policy of the Federal Government." The website, known as "We the People," was launched by the Obama administration in 2011, and since Trump took office has taken on increased prominence as an outlet for protest. It was briefly taken down by the Trump administration last year but was relaunched in late January.
