Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a grim warning as intense fighting surrounded Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant over the weekend, fueling fears Russia’s invasion could plunge the world into a nuclear disaster. Located in the Ukrainian city of Enerhodar along the Dnipro river, which is now Russian–occupied, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is standing perilously close to the frontlines of battle between the two warring countries. On Friday, Russians shelled the power plant twice, damaging critical infrastructure and radiation sensors. The attacks continued throughout the weekend. The nuclear power company Energoatom said in a Telegram post on Friday the attacks came within hours of each other, with the second attack using rocket-propelled grenades that struck Zaporizhzhia “near one of the power units where the nuclear reactor is located,” the company said. “There are risks of hydrogen leakage and sputtering of radioactive substances. Fire danger … [Read more...] about Nuclear Disaster ‘Miraculously Avoided’ During ‘Suicidal’ Russian Attack

Enes Kanter Freedom: White House Cannot Exchange ‘Merchant of Death’ for Brittney Griner
“I want [Brittney Griner] to return back home. … [but] we cannot trade that horrible human being for her. It’s just not a fair trade,” professional basketball player Enes Kanter Freedom said during a Friday appearance on Fox News’ The Story with Martha MacCallum. Freedom, who has been an outspoken critic on human rights issues in countries such as Communist China, officially added the “Freedom” to his name after becoming a U.S. citizen in 2021. WNBA player Griner, who was arrested in February in a Moscow airport with CDB oil in her luggage, was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison on drug charges by a Russian court Thursday morning. The Biden administration reportedly made an offer to swap Brittney for convicted arms dealer and “Merchant of Death” Viktor Bout, who is being held on a 25-year sentence in the U.S. for selling weapons to a Columbian terror group. “I’ve been following her case very closely and the one thing that I will say, we cannot be sending a … [Read more...] about Enes Kanter Freedom: White House Cannot Exchange ‘Merchant of Death’ for Brittney Griner
Officials Blast Amnesty International Report Accusing Ukraine of Endangering Civilians
A report from Amnesty International published Thursday claims that Ukrainian forces are putting civilians at risk by setting up bases in residential neighborhoods, even as authorities continue to deride Russian forces for committing atrocities against Ukrainians. “Ukrainian forces have put civilians in harm’s way by establishing bases and operating weapons systems in populated residential areas, including in schools and hospitals, as they repelled the Russian invasion that began in February,” Amnesty International said in a statement. “Such tactics violate international humanitarian law and endanger civilians, as they turn civilian objects into military targets.” Russian strikes have hit civilians in populous areas where Ukraine has set up bases, Amnesty said. Ukraine’s tactics have put civilians in harm’s way in 19 towns, in part because they launched strikes from residential areas and based themselves in civilian buildings in the Kharkiv, Donbas, and Mykolaiv regions, … [Read more...] about Officials Blast Amnesty International Report Accusing Ukraine of Endangering Civilians

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa’s stance on Russia’s war in Ukraine and the adverse effects of the conflict on African countries are expected to feature in a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations Naledi Pandor on Monday. Blinken is in South Africa as part of a three-nation tour of Africa including Congo and Rwanda in what is seen as a contest between Western nations and Russia to win support from African countries over the war in Ukraine. Blinken's tour follows similar trips to African countries by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and French President Emmanuel Macron. South Africa is among many African countries that have taken a neutral stance on the Ukraine war and avoided public criticism of Russia. Two prominent men died on Titanic – were they secretly a couple?
Let's be clear up front: No one knows for sure whether Archibald Butt and Francis Davis Millet were in a romantic relationship. In the times and society in which they lived, for such a thing to become known would have meant ruin. Here's what we do know. Butt never married. Millet was estranged from his wife and had a previous relationship with a man. Butt and Millet lived together in a mansion in Washington's tony Georgetown neighborhood, where they threw parties for the city's elite - including Butt's boss, President William Howard Taft. And in the weeks before they died on the Titanic, they were vacationing together in Europe. "The enduring partnership of Butt and Millet was an early case of 'Don't ask, don't tell,' " historian Richard Davenport-Hines wrote in 2012, referring to the policy that once required gay members of the military to keep their sexuality secret. A National Park Service page for the White House memorial fountain in their honor says they were "widely … [Read more...] about Two prominent men died on Titanic – were they secretly a couple?
The Biden Age Is Hitting Its Stride
Photo: Sarah Silbiger/Getty Images Last week, Democratic Representative Carolyn Maloney of the Upper East Side, chair of the powerful House Committee on Oversight and Reform, made national headlines by telling me, in the middle of a high-stakes televised debate , that she thinks Joe Biden will voluntarily be a one-term president. “I don’t believe he is running for reelection,” she said in response to my yes/no question about whether Biden ought to be a candidate in 2024. The remark drew a double take from attorney Siraj Patel, one of her fellow debaters, but it wasn’t a gaffe: When asked on CNN to clarify the remark the next morning, Maloney quasi apologized and pledged her support for the president, but reemphasized that she doesn’t believe Biden will be a candidate. Maloney’s remarks fly in the face of emphatic White House statements. “To be clear, as the president has said repeatedly, he plans to run in 2024,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tweeted in June. … [Read more...] about The Biden Age Is Hitting Its Stride

Pete Rose Dismisses Allegations of Sex with Minor: ‘It was 55 Years Ago, Babe’
MLB legend Pete Rose got a bit vexed while he was in Philadelphia for the team’s 1980 World Champion celebration on Sunday when a reporter revived accusations that he had a sexual affair with a minor back in the 1970s. During the press availability portion of the celebration of the Phillies’ big season, Philadelphia Inquirer sportswriter Alex Coffey asked if his “presence” at the celebration sent a “negative message to women.” Charlie Hustle, who was banned from Major League Baseball in 1989 over gambling charges, reportedly replied, “No, I’m not here to talk about that. Sorry about that. It was 55 years ago babe.” I asked Pete Rose what he would say to people who say his presence here sends a negative message to women. His response: “No, I’m not here to talk about that. Sorry about that. It was 55 years ago babe.” — Alex Coffey (@byalexcoffey) August 7, 2022 Rose also offered a longer comment on the accusations, saying, “I’m going to tell you one more time. Click here to read the full article. Kevin Smith spoke out against Warner Bros.’ axing of “ Batgirl ” during the latest episode of his “Hollywood Babble-On” YouTube show. The filmmaker called it “an incredible bad look” for the studio to drop the rare comic book tentpole to be headlined by a Latina actor, especially when Warner Bros. is still moving forward on the release of its Ezra Miller-led tentpole “ The Flash .” “It’s an incredibly bad look to cancel the Latina Batgirl movie,” Smith said. “I don’t give a shit if the movie was absolute fucking dog shit – I guarantee you that it wasn’t. The two directors [Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi] who directed that movie did a couple of episodes of ‘Ms. Marvel,’ and it was a wonderful fucking show and they had more money to do ‘Batgirl’ than they had to do an episode of ‘Ms. Marvel’ and stuff.” More from Variety 'Scoob!: Holiday Haunt' Producer Reveals Score Being Recorded After Film's Axing: 'Already Paid for the … [Read more...] about Kevin Smith Slams Warner Bros. for Axing ‘Batgirl’ but Still Releasing ‘The Flash’: ‘That Is Baffling’
