KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Russia attacked the Ukrainian capital in the early hours of Sunday morning, striking at least two residential buildings, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, as elsewhere Russian troops consolidated their gains in the east. Associated Press journalists in Kyiv saw rescue services battling flames and rescuing civilians. Klitschko said four people were hospitalized with injuries and a 7-year-old girl was pulled alive from the rubble. Ukraine Member of Parliament Oleksiy Goncharenko wrote on the Telegram messaging app that “according to prelim data 14 missiles were launched against Kyiv region and Kyiv.” Before Sunday’s early morning attack, Kyiv had not faced any such Russian airstrikes since June 5. Klitschko told journalists that he believed “it is maybe a symbolic attack” ahead of this week’s NATO summit in Madrid. Airman in custody in probe of Syria blast injuring US troops
WASHINGTON (AP) — An Air Force airman has been taken into custody in connection with an April explosion that injured several U.S. troops at a base in eastern Syria. Rose Riley, an Air Force spokeswoman, said the airman was placed in pretrial confinement by his commander after a review of the investigation. An initial hearing on the matter is expected to take place Wednesday. Riley said no charges have yet been filed, and the airman's identity will not be released unless he is charged. The military has provided no details on the investigation. The U.S. military initially reported that the injuries were caused by artillery or another form of indirect fire. But it later said the April 7 attack was carried out by the “deliberate placement of explosive charges” by one or more individuals at an ammunition holding area and shower facility on the base, known as Green Village. The blasts hit two support buildings and four service members were evaluated for minor injuries and possible … [Read more...] about Airman in custody in probe of Syria blast injuring US troops
Russia’s bombs and bullets not the only things killing Ukrainians — stress is, too
LVIV, Ukraine — Russia’s bombs and bullets did not kill Liubov Hrudiy — the stress of war did. Following a perilous journey from eastern Ukraine with her grandson, Hrudiy, 73, died minutes after arriving in the western city of Lviv last week. Now her grandson, Vladyslav, 17, has to live with the nonphysical scars of that trauma. He’s not alone. The more than 3.1 million Ukrainians who have fled their country since Russia invaded it on Feb. 24 will all carry invisible scars with them long after they reach safety. And while many will carry the emotional and physical impact of their experiences for many years, experts on refugee trauma say there are ways to help. “Nothing can be done to undo the horrible things that have happened, but a lot can be done to help on a human, individual and community basis to support the dignity of Ukrainian refugees,” said Dr. Allen Keller, founder of the Bellevue Program for Survivors of Torture and the director of the New York … [Read more...] about Russia’s bombs and bullets not the only things killing Ukrainians — stress is, too
Russia pessimistic after U.S. responds to Putin’s demands in Ukraine standoff
The U.S. said it had offered a “diplomatic path forward” in the standoff with Russia over Ukraine . On Thursday, the Kremlin said it saw little grounds for optimism. With the ball now back in Moscow's court, the West was given little immediate sign that Russian President Vladimir Putin would seek to de-escalate tensions and allay fears of a deadly new conflict. Russia warned it was pessimistic but indicated it would take its time to study the written responses from the U.S. and NATO before it decides how to move forward. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said there were “few reasons for optimism” after the Western allies made it clear that they would not accede to Russia's key asks, but he urged against a rush to conclusions. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters there was hope for “the start of a serious conversation” but clearly not on the fundamental issues raised by Russia, whose demands amounted to an effort to redraw Europe’s post-Cold War security … [Read more...] about Russia pessimistic after U.S. responds to Putin’s demands in Ukraine standoff

KYIV, Ukraine — With full control of the steel plant that transfixed the world for months and a tightened grip on Ukraine’s southern coast, Russia redoubled its assault Friday on the eastern industrial heartland known as the Donbas. Fed Attacks Inflation With Highest Rate Hike Since 1994
4 Business The central bank raised it's key interest rate by three-quarters of a point, part of a campaign to tighten credit and slow inflation. Associated Press , News Partner Posted Replies WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve on Wednesday intensified its drive to tame high inflation by raising its key interest rate by three-quarters of a point — its largest hike in nearly three decades — and signaling more large rate increases to come that would raise the risk of another recession. The move the Fed announced after its latest policy meeting will raise its benchmark short-term rate, which affects many consumer and business loans, to a range of 1.5 percent to 1.75 percent. With the additional rate hikes they foresee, the policymakers expect their key rate to reach a range of 3.25 percent to 3.5 percent by year's end — the highest level since 2008 — meaning that most forms of borrowing will become sharply more expensive. The central … [Read more...] about Fed Attacks Inflation With Highest Rate Hike Since 1994
Distracted Putin Is About to Tumble Into a New Bloodbath, Officials Warn
ISTANBUL—Russia’s distraction over the war in Ukraine has forced its military presence to decrease in areas that may soon face a Turkish offensive, Syrian opposition officials told The Daily Beast this week. The officials, including in the opposition Syrian National Army (SNA), said Moscow has withdrawn from several areas in northwestern Syria near the Turkish border, including Tal Rifaat, where Ankara has said it would carry out a military operation to combat the U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey considers a terrorist group. The SNA, a coalition of rebel groups backed by Turkey, would take part in the possible operation, according to Yusuf Hammoud, an officer and former spokesperson for the SNA. Hammoud, who is based in northwestern Afrin, Syria, said Russia has decreased its presence in areas around Aleppo and Tal Rifaat. “It will make it easier for Turkey to win this war,” Hammoud told The Daily Beast. Russian Gas Addiction Sees Germany Move One Step Closer to Rationing
Germany has moved one step closer to rationing gas after the country triggered its second tranche of emergency powers over the ongoing crisis. The energy crisis appears to only be going from bad to worse in Germany, with the country announcing that it was triggering the second level of its three-tier gas emergency plan, with the last and final level being available to the state allowing authorities to begin rationing supply. It comes shortly after Moscow dramatically reduced the amount of gas it is supplying to the central European state, which has become heavily addicted to Russian energy exports in part as a result of the country’s obsession with its climate change agenda. According to a report by Die Welt , Germany’s Economics and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck announced the move to the second level of emergency powers on Thursday, with the country now aiming to fill its gas storage tanks before winter hits. “We are in a gas crisis. Gas is now a scarce … [Read more...] about Russian Gas Addiction Sees Germany Move One Step Closer to Rationing
European Gas Prices Could Double or Triple in Some Countries: Expert
European gas prices have already risen substantially this year but one expert has predicted that costs could double or even triple in some countries by the end of the year. Expert Marcell Göttert from Agenda Austria, a research institute based in Vienna, has claimed that Austria, which is heavily reliant on Russian energy exports like natural gas, could see costs double by the end of the year, while others have stated Germany, which is also reliant on Russian energy exports, could see costs triple. According to Göttert, energy prices are unlikely to begin to relax or decrease until at least 2024, while the cost of gas for consumers has already increased by around 60 per cent, the Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung reports . Earlier this week, the German government sounded the alarm over gas supplies, with Economics and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck announcing that the country would move to the second level of emergency powers to help fill gas storage prior to the … [Read more...] about European Gas Prices Could Double or Triple in Some Countries: Expert
