Unspecified sellers in China are increasingly using online venues to advertise Uyghurs for sale in “batches of 50 to 100 workers,” Sky News revealed on Friday. “On Chinese websites, there are dozens of postings advertising Uighur [sic] labour, in batches of 50 to 100 workers,” Sky News reported on April 16. “Baidu, the company hosting the job postings, did not respond to a request for comment.” Baidu is a Chinese multinational technology company providing Internet-related services, including China’s top search engine. The Baidu advertisements suggested Uyghur laborers were under “tight political and social controls,” according to Sky News, which noted that one posting stated the “security of workers will be guaranteed by the government.” Sky did not mention the ads suggesting the workers would be compensated in any way. Roughly 10 million Turkic-speaking Uyghurs live in Xinjiang, China’s westernmost territory bordering Central Asia. Joe Biden Now Describes Migrant Rush on the Border as a ‘Crisis’
President Joe Biden finally described the rush of unaccompanied minor migrants to the border as a “crisis” on Saturday, despite himself and members of his administration previously refusing to use the word to describe the situation. Biden spoke to reporters about the border crisis after a round of golf at the Delaware Country Club on Saturday. He commented on the crisis as he explained why he reversed his position on raising the caps set by former President Donald Trump on refugees. “The problem was that the refugee part was working on the crisis that ended up on the border with young people,” he said to reporters. “We couldn’t do two things at once. But now we are going to increase the number.” Preliminary data shows more than 18,500 unaccompanied children crossed the border in March, 60 percent more than the previous record of 11,494 in May 2019. In March, Biden denied the flood of migrants coming to the Southern border was a crisis. “No,” he replied when a reporter … [Read more...] about Joe Biden Now Describes Migrant Rush on the Border as a ‘Crisis’
How to solve the statehood issue
The full House of Representatives is set for a vote in the coming days to make the District of Columbia a state. The bill is a priority for Democrats and the White House. Senators are calling for the killing of the filibuster rule to allow D.C. to become a state with just 51 votes after a tie breaker by Vice President Kamala Harris. There has been comparatively little debate of the bill in the House, where perfunctory hearings rushed it to the floor. What was missing by design in the House was any acknowledgment, let alone consideration, of alternatives to creating the first Vatican-like city-state in the country. Most importantly, there was no discussion of what district citizens could gain from an alternative to statehood — retrocession. The country remains sharply divided over D.C. statehood despite years of advocacy and overwhelming media support. In January, a Harris/Hill poll showed 52 percent of respondents favoring statehood while 48 percent opposed it. In March, … [Read more...] about How to solve the statehood issue
