(CNN)Even before Donald Trump is impeached, the partisanship of his looming Senate trial is casting doubt on whether polarized Washington can hold a President to account -- now and in the future. Democrats Sunday accused Republicans of subverting bedrock values on which America is founded after Republican Senate leadership abandoned any notion that they had not pre-judged the case. Furious exchanges came three days before the Democratic-led House is expected to vote to saddle Trump with the historic shame of impeachment over his demand for favors from Ukraine. The bitterness underscored how the saga has deepened divisions highlighted by Trump and how his power over the GOP is causing party lawmakers to ignore or deny grave charges against him. Democrats concerned about McConnell's White House impeachment coordination The President meanwhile fulminated on Twitter all weekend, inciting fresh political uproar to intimidate vulnerable House Democrats and to electrify the base he … [Read more...] about Republican tactics spark Democratic claims that impeachment trial is rigged

With or without Trump, GOP insurgency plans for a civil war in 2018 midterms
The next Republican revolution began last week on a bright blue bus parked at a nighttime rally in Montgomery, Ala., days before a firebrand GOP candidate won the state’s Senate primary. But unlike previous Republican revolutionaries, the hard-line figures who stepped out to cheers did not want to yank the party to the right on age-old issues such as taxes or spending. They wanted to gut it and leave its establishment smashed. Fury infused these insurgents’ raw remarks as did a common theme: The Republican Party has failed its voters, and a national cleansing was needed in the coming year, regardless of whether President Donald Trump was on board. Longtime Republicans see a charged civil war on the horizon.“There is an emotional component,” former House speaker Newt Gingrich, R, said of the frustrations of Trump’s core backers, who have grown increasingly vocal. “They want someone to kick over the table. And my advice to every Republican is: You … [Read more...] about With or without Trump, GOP insurgency plans for a civil war in 2018 midterms
Sessions Touts ‘Substantial Pushback’ Against Deep State Under Trump — ‘One Unified Executive Under the Constitution’
One of the gripes that may have led to the election of President Donald Trump in 2016 was how the federal bureaucracy had overwhelmed the government to a point where some saw elected officials were no longer in charge, but instead unelected civil servants.During an appearance on Huntsville, AL radio’s WVNN, former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a candidate for U.S. Senate in Alabama discussed the progress Trump has made in taking on bureaucracy, or the so-called “deep state,” especially as it is related to within the Department of Justice. Sessions told “The Jeff Poor Show” that he credits Trump with those efforts, including the firing of James Comey as FBI director. “I think there’s been a substantial pushback,” Sessions said. “Comey, the FBI at the top level — not the grassroots here in Alabama and everything — but the FBI at the top level — they were leaking. They seemed to have a political agenda. They … [Read more...] about Sessions Touts ‘Substantial Pushback’ Against Deep State Under Trump — ‘One Unified Executive Under the Constitution’
Yet Another Prize in the High-Stakes 2020 Race: Control of Redistricting
Democrats may flip the Virginia legislature this year, but in 2020 a lot will depend on the presidential race. Photo: Katherine Frey/The Washington Post/Getty Images There is so much going on in the run-up to the 2020 elections that you can sympathize with those who feel their particular needs are being ignored by their party — or more to the point, their party’s donors. This is the subtext of a Politico piece giving Republicans focused on 2020 state legislative battlegrounds the opportunity to whine and rattle their cups as they explain how outgunned they feel compared to their Democratic foes. They do have the very valid point to make that this isn’t just any old state legislative election cycle: it’s the one immediately preceding the next decennial round of congressional and state legislative redistricting. So the outcomes are a pretty big deal, at least in those states where legislatures retain control over redistricting (as opposed to those where … [Read more...] about Yet Another Prize in the High-Stakes 2020 Race: Control of Redistricting
