Thomas William Edward Karna’s mother, Maranda Karna, sent out invitations to 70 people to come to her son's 10th birthday party. Less than five people replied, "yes" to the invite. Stephenie Lovejoy, Maranda Karna's best friend, decided to turn to social media to help her friend by writing on Facebook a few simple sentences. “I am creating this event because my friend Miranda invited 70 people to her son Thomas’s birthday and only one person responded," Lovejoy, 28, who works as a volunteer with the Washington County Heroin Task Force, wrote on a Facebook page she created to invite people to join Thomas’ party. "He has autism and I am making this post to invite all the bikers in the area to come and meet up and show him that he is not different and that he is loved just as much as everyone else." By Judith Martin, Nicholas Ivor Martin and Jacobina Martin | United Feature Syndicate PUBLISHED: July 6, 2018 at 6:00 am | UPDATED: July 6, 2018 at 7:25 am DEAR MISS MANNERS: This left me stunned: My sister sent out text invitations for her older son’s eighth birthday party. Included was a note requesting that all presents be I purchased a building set that my nephew had mentioned and, though I thought the request was bizarre and crude, dropped the toy off the day before the party. My sister was annoyed that the present was “late,” but accepted it. On the day of the party, the boy sat down to open his gifts and, much to my surprise, the gift from me was not the one I purchased. Apparently, that was the case for a good number of the gifts. Yes, my sister requested the presents early to “pre-return them for something more appropriate” (her words). In some cases, the gifts were “too cheap.” Other gifts, mine included, were returned for … [Read more...] about Miss Manners: I can’t believe what she did with his birthday gifts
Driving the Day CONGRESS IS BACK THIS WEEK… HERE ARE 4 THINGS TO WATCH … -- IMMIGRATION BLOW UP: A petition to force a wide-ranging immigration debate on the House floor stands at 213 -- five short of the requisite 218. House Republican leaders have been working feverishly behind the scenes to strike a compromise that would avoid the free-flowing debate, and instead give Republicans a series of circumscribed votes this month. The GOP has scheduled a two-hour policy meeting Thursday to discuss immigration. No matter what happens, these next four weeks will be dominated, in part, by the immigration debate that Congress has been yearning for for the last six years. This could be a defining moment for the GOP, and there is lots of skepticism that this will go smoothly. Driving the Day AT 4:46 P.M. yesterday afternoon, PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP delivered REP. DAN DONOVAN (R-N.Y.) an endorsement the lawmaker had long been waiting for. Donovan is running against MICHAEL GRIMM, a former House Republican who was recently in prison. The district they’re running in is Staten Island and Brooklyn, a narrowly Republican swath of New York City that voted for Trump overwhelmingly. Grimm has positioned Donovan as insufficiently supportive of Trump’s legislative agenda. Needless to say, this is one of the districts in America where Trump could be helpful. -- TRUMP, on Twitter: “There is no one better to represent the people of N.Y. and Staten Island (a place I know very well) than @RepDanDonovan, who is strong on Borders & Crime, loves our Military & our Vets, voted for Tax Cuts and is helping me to Make America Great Again. Dan has my full endorsement! … Very importantly, @RepDanDonovan will win for the Republicans in November...and … [Read more...] about Playbook: Trump flubs endorsement of N.Y. congressman
Driving the Day LATEST TEST OF TRUMP ON THE TRAIL … POTUS TO NASHVILLE TODAY … WAPO’S MARY JORDAN in Fairfield Glade, Tennessee: “In Tennessee, Marsha Blackburn’s embrace of Trump tests her standing with female voters”: “Rep. Marsha Blackburn, the conservative lawmaker who boasts of packing a pistol in her purse and of her passion for President Trump, had just left a pancake breakfast Saturday when a woman moved close. “‘How as a woman can you support Donald Trump?’ asked Marcia Storrison, a Democratic retiree in this heavily Republican area of hilly green golf courses. ‘His lies!
