Shannon Antinori , Patch Staff Posted Replies ILLINOIS — Federal health authorities are expected to soon ease COVID-19 guidelines for schools, according to a new report. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could announce the changes in the coming days , CNN reported. The CDC is expected to ease guidelines that address screening for the virus, as well as social distancing recommendations. Mimosas out, espresso martinis in? 2 Texas women launch boozy coffee in a can
DALLAS — It all started at brunch, when Dallas women Nicole Craven and Alexis Smith would order an espresso martini — just the right mix of caffeine and booze for a weekend cocktail, they say. When the pandemic struck and the workout buddies turned to hosting small dinner parties instead of going to restaurants and bars, they found that making an espresso martini at home just wasn’t the same. Why isn’t this available for sale in a can, they wondered? They quit their jobs in public relations and formulated their own canned espresso martini, a yearlong process that involved going into a “flavor house” in California to taste concoctions mixed up by people in lab coats. Their boozy-brew dream worked, and now, three gluten-free, dairy-free espresso martinis are available for sale online in 40 states. Their new company Après Hours has cans for sale now in about two-dozen Dallas-area retail stores like Pogo’s Wine & Spirits, Lucky’s Liquor, Buddy’s Booze and Uptown Liquor. … [Read more...] about Mimosas out, espresso martinis in? 2 Texas women launch boozy coffee in a can

Exactly Zero Point Three Percent Of Americans Are Transgender
Exactly 0.3 percent of Americans are transgender, according to a 2011 report from the Williams Institute. That study pegged the number of transgenders in America at around 700,000 people. Or, to put it differently: 99.7 percent of Americans aren’t transgender. And 0.3 percent might actually be too high of a number. The Williams Institute’s researchers arrived at the commonly-cited 0.3 percent figure by averaging the results of two studies — one in Massachusetts and one in California. The Massachusetts study found that 0.5 percent of the population was transgender, while the California study found that transgenders made up just 0.1 percent of the population. That is: the California study found only one in 1000 Californians to be transgender. A 2009 study in the United Kingdom found similar results. That study found that only 0.1 percent of the UK population was transgender. The UK researchers used a slightly narrower definition of transgender, referring only to … [Read more...] about Exactly Zero Point Three Percent Of Americans Are Transgender
Officials Blast Amnesty International Report Accusing Ukraine of Endangering Civilians
A report from Amnesty International published Thursday claims that Ukrainian forces are putting civilians at risk by setting up bases in residential neighborhoods, even as authorities continue to deride Russian forces for committing atrocities against Ukrainians. “Ukrainian forces have put civilians in harm’s way by establishing bases and operating weapons systems in populated residential areas, including in schools and hospitals, as they repelled the Russian invasion that began in February,” Amnesty International said in a statement. “Such tactics violate international humanitarian law and endanger civilians, as they turn civilian objects into military targets.” Russian strikes have hit civilians in populous areas where Ukraine has set up bases, Amnesty said. Ukraine’s tactics have put civilians in harm’s way in 19 towns, in part because they launched strikes from residential areas and based themselves in civilian buildings in the Kharkiv, Donbas, and Mykolaiv regions, … [Read more...] about Officials Blast Amnesty International Report Accusing Ukraine of Endangering Civilians
I experienced the festival opulence of the $2,000 Outside Lands VIP pass
Anyone who has ever been to a music festival knows that using the bathroom is an annoying chore at best, and at worst, a test of how long you can hold your breath and bladder. However, on Saturday afternoon at Outside Lands , armed with my Golden Gate Club wristband, that experience was “elevated.” Instead of waiting to exhale, I breathe deeply as I cleanse my hands in the spacious lavatory trailer with mid-tier designer soap (Public Goods, if you must know). Then I spritzed myself with a facial mist that smelled like fresh sheets from a boutique hotel. A wristband that allows entry to this luxurious bathroom, as well as a host of other perks including front of stage access, costs $1,995 for one day, plus fees (general admission is $175). I was given media access to this exclusive wonderland in order to experience the grandeur, and report back to you, the reader who is likely spending that amount of money on a month’s pandemic-reduced rent in a one-bedroom San Francisco … [Read more...] about I experienced the festival opulence of the $2,000 Outside Lands VIP pass
