HARARE, Zimbabwe — Even in death, Robert Mugabe, the former strongman leader of Zimbabwe, has remained a source of contention, this time caught in a dispute between his family and the government over where to bury him. Mr. Mugabe, who spent more than three decades in power before being ousted in 2017, died last week at age 95 at a Singapore hospital. And even as his body was being transported back to his home country, his family and the government were arguing about his final resting place and whether his burial would be public or private. Now, a week after his death, it seems that issue may finally have been resolved. The family of Mr. Mugabe, the freedom fighter turned authoritarian ruler, had demanded that his body be buried in his home village in a private ceremony. But the government wanted a public burial at the National Heroes Acre monument in Harare, the capital, alongside other prominent government figures from his ZANU-PF party. Mr. Mugabe’s first wife, Sally … [Read more...] about Robert Mugabe, Even in Death, Divides Zimbabwe
The body of Zimbabwe's former president Robert Mugabe was buried on Saturday in his rural village of Kutama, an AFP reporter at the scene said. The family of Mugabe gathered in his rural homestead, three weeks after his death, to attend a much-awaited burial ceremony. Mugabe died in a Singapore hospital on September 6, aged 95, almost two years after a military coup ended his despotic 37-year rule. His remains will be laid to rest in the courtyard of his home in the district of Zvimba, about 90 kilometres west of the capital Harare. Hundreds of mourners assembled for the low-key event, which was initially intended to be a private family ceremony. Many wore white Mugabe-emblazoned T-shirts with the slogans "founding father", "liberator" and "torch bearer". Some were singing and dancing. Others sat quietly under two white tents set up for the occasion. Mugabe's widow Grace and his children accompanied the casket - drapped in Zimbabwe's green, yellow, red and black flag. The coffin of … [Read more...] about News24.com | UPDATE | Robert Mugabe buried in low-key ceremony with a no-show from senior govt officials
Zimbabwe's founding president Robert Mugabe had "advanced cancer" when he died in hospital in Singapore on September 6, the state-owned newspaper reported on Monday. The former guerilla leader, who died aged 95, came to power at the end of white minority rule in 1980 and ruled Zimbabwe uninterrupted for 37 years and seven months. He was toppled on November 2017 in a military-backed coup, ending an increasingly iron-fisted rule marked by political oppression and economic ruin. Mugabe's health deteriorated rapidly after the ousting and he made regular trips to Singapore to seek treatment. "Mugabe had advanced cancer, and had to be taken off chemotherapy treatment because it was no longer effective," said The Herald on Monday. The information was revealed by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa during an address to party supporters in New York on Saturday, according to the paper. "Doctors had stopped treatment... because of age and also because the cancer had spread and it was not … [Read more...] about News24.com | Robert Mugabe died of cancer – Zimbabwe media
The bizarre burial of Robert Mugabe saw the former Zimbabwean leader interred in a steel-lined coffin under a layer of concrete on Saturday, following a bitter dispute over his resting place between government officials, traditional leaders and family members. Twenty-two days after he died, the body of the strongman was finally buried next to his home with second wife Grace Mugabe in Kutama, Zvimba, the village of his birth, 55 miles north west of Harare. His eldest nephew, Leo Mugabe, who played a central role in the prolonged burial drama, said the coffin which brought his embalmed body to Harare from Singapore had to be changed for security reasons. “People really are after his body or his body parts, so we wanted something that is tamper-proof. That is why the casket was changed,” he told a local radio station. After the coffin was lowered into the ground in a private ceremony close to the home which Grace Mugabe had … [Read more...] about Robert Mugabe buried in a steel coffin encased in concrete as family claims people are 'after his body'
Zimbabwe's former president Robert Mugabe was buried on Saturday in his rural home village of Kutama in a private farewell for one of Africa’s most divisive figures. Mugabe died in a Singapore hospital on September 6, aged 95, almost two years after a military coup ended his despotic 37-year rule. A weeks-long dispute with the administration that forced him from power had caused some uncertainty over the former leader's resting place. His coffin, draped in the country’s flag, was carried by military pallbearers as his black-veiled wife, Grace, looked on. On display was a photo of Mugabe holding up his fist in a classic gesture of defiance, and a floral arrangement spelled out "Dad." Many mourners wore T-shirts saying "Liberator" and "Torch bearer." Grace later stood motionless as the coffin was lowered into the grave and a choir sang "Remember me." "This man lives forever," declared the priest, to cries of approval.
