Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges

Fourth-generation Texan Leah Payne moved to Denver last year in the wake of a new Texas abortion law that imposed some of the strictest abortion restrictions in the nation. “We left our family, friends, sold our house. We couldn’t live somewhere where abortion access was constantly under attack,” Payne told The Denver Post. At 19, Payne, who was on birth control, got pregnant. She didn’t have insurance at the time and decided to have an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic. “It was put out there as this big, bad thing that was traumatizing, but I never felt that,” Payne said. “Now, I’m 32, I’m a homeowner here in Denver and have a really successful career, a great partner, and I don’t think any of those things would have happened if I had not had an abortion at 19.” Payne chose her new home after learning about access to reproductive care in the state, and many Americans who woke up on Friday with fewer rights than they had a day prior may be forced to make similar … [Read more...] about Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges

Protesters outside the Supreme Court on June 24. Photo: Brandon Bell/Getty Images The Supreme Court decision ending abortion access for millions of Americans did not come as a surprise . But having a leaked preview of Samuel Alito’s majority opinion in advance has not dulled the outrage over the end of Roe v. Wade in America. Immediately after the ruling was announced, protestors began assembling outside the Court to express their fury. Democrats, without immediate recourse, read poems on television . Meanwhile, Republican-controlled states, now given by a green light by the Court, began moving forward with immediate bans restricting access to abortion. Below are updates on the ongoing fallout from the most consequential Supreme Court decision in decades. . “Find the way to hope, not as feel-good anesthetic but as tactical necessity” At the Cut, Rebecca Traister warns against despair : It is no accident that many who believed this came from or moved … [Read more...] about Outrage, Uncertainty, and Instant Abortion Bans After Supreme Court Overturns

‘Homeland’ and ‘Shameless’: Television Tackles Bipolar Disorder With Realism

On Homeland , Claire Danes ’ Carrie Mathison is a brilliant and ambitious CIA analyst, gifted with a beautiful mind that sees connections and hidden patterns that others around her can’t. She’s driven to an obsessive fixation on Nicholas Brody ( Damian Lewis ), a recently returned POW whom she believes to be a terrorist sleeper agent. Carrie, to her horror and ours, is right. However, Carrie suffers from bipolar disorder , a crippling psychological condition that is sometimes known as manic-depression, which affects roughly 5.7 million Americans , or 2.6 percent of the U.S. adult population , according to data from the National Institute of Mental Health. The illness includes “dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels that affect a person’s ability to carry out day-to-day tasks” that “are more severe than the normal ups and downs that are experienced by everyone.” (Other symptoms can include but are not limited to erratic behavior, hypersexuality, rapid … [Read more...] about ‘Homeland’ and ‘Shameless’: Television Tackles Bipolar Disorder With Realism

‘Forever Chemicals’ More Dangerous Than Previously Thought, EPA Says

June 16, 2022 by patch.com Leave a Comment

4 Politics & Government At the least, water utilities should tell residents if their water contains PFAS a cluster of chemicals found in durable plastics, EPA says. Beth Dalbey , Patch Staff Posted Replies ACROSS AMERICA — Human-made " forever chemicals " found in water supplies across the country are more dangerous than previously thought, and local utilities should install filters to remove them or at least tell customers how dangerous they are, the Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday. Polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are known as "forever chemicals" because of their durability in high heat and water, which means they remain in the environment for years without breaking down. They're found in a range of food and consumer products, and have been linked to infertility, thyroid problems and several types of cancer. No state is untouched by PFAS contamination, according to a map compiled … [Read more...] about ‘Forever Chemicals’ More Dangerous Than Previously Thought, EPA Says

Maryland Officials React To Supreme Court Overturning Roe V. Wade

June 24, 2022 by baltimore.cbslocal.com Leave a Comment

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. Although Maryland has had abortion protections in place since the early 1990s, many state officials on Friday expressed disgust at the court’s 6-3 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. READ MORE: Supreme Court Overturns Roe V. Wade, Allowing States To Ban Abortions The Maryland General Assembly failed during the legislative session earlier this year to advance legislation enshrining the right to abortion in the state’s constitution, a move supporters backed in anticipation of the Supreme Court’s ruling. The House of Delegates passed the measure but it stalled in the Maryland State Senate . In a statement, Senate President Bill Ferguson (D-Baltimore City) said the fight for abortion access will continue at the state level. “Today is a distressing day for Americans, … [Read more...] about Maryland Officials React To Supreme Court Overturning Roe V. You can listen to an audio version of the newsletter by clicking the same link. New York (CNN Business) Some investors look to copper prices as a bellwether for the global economy. If you're one of them, you have good reason to be worried. What's happening: Copper prices hit 16-month lows on Thursday as traders dumped the metal. They've dropped more than 11% in two weeks. "Copper prices are just starting to account for the fact that global growth is slowing," Daniel Ghali, director of commodity strategy at TD Securities, told me. The metal is used in many construction materials, including electrical wires and water pipes. That means it's often viewed as a proxy for economic activity, since demand tends to heat up when the economy is expanding and cool when it's contracting. It's affectionately referred to as "Dr. … [Read more...] about Another recession warning: Falling copper prices

Mandatory Common Core tests in New York just happen to be full of corporate brand names

April 22, 2014 by dailycaller.com Leave a Comment

Across the state of New York, this year’s Common Core English tests have reportedly featured a slew of brand-name products including iPod, Barbie, Mug Root Beer and Life Savers. For Nike, the tests even conveniently included the shoe company’s ubiquitous slogan: “Just Do It.” The brands – and apparently even some of their familiar trademark symbols – appeared in tests questions for students ranging from third to eighth grades, reports The Post-Standard of Syracuse . Over one million students were required to take the tests. Parents, teachers and school administrators have speculated that the kid-friendly brand names are a new form of product placement. Education materials behemoth Pearson, which has a $32 million five-year contract to develop New York’s Common Core-related tests, has barred teachers and school officials from disclosing the contents of the tests. Students and parents are not so barred, though, and many have complained. “‘Why are they trying to sell me … [Read more...] about Mandatory Common Core tests in New York just happen to be full of corporate brand names

People lined up outside of Department of Health & Mental Hygiene clinic on June 23 in New York City. Photo: Tayfun Coskun/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images As the city’s LGBTQ+ community prepares to revel in Pride festivities this coming weekend, the mood outside of the sexual-health clinic in Chelsea on Thursday, where hundreds of men lined up to be vaccinated against monkeypox , was decidedly not festive. “The city and the federal government are not doing a great job to protect the gay community during this outbreak,” said James Krellenstein, an activist who managed to get an appointment and received his first shot on Thursday. “This is a recipe for disaster that will lead to a mass-transmission event.” On the eve of the first Pride parade to have a full slate of programming since the pandemic began , many in the gay community are feeling anxious about monkeypox , the smallpox-like disease that’s been detected in 3,500 people around the globe.
