PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island Hospital, owned by Lifespan Corp., and United Nurses & Allied Professionals Local 5098 ended a seven-hour negotiation meeting Wednesday without an agreement on a new contract but an appointment to resume discussions Friday and differing accounts of the nature of the talks. UNAP represents approximately 2,400 nurses, technologists, therapists and mental health workers at Rhode Island and Hasbro Children’s hospitals. The previous contract expired June 30. An earlier impasse between the parties resulted in a four-day strike from July 23 at 3 p.m. until July 27 at 3 p.m. “Today, Lifespan made clear its intent to punish union members for exercising their protected rights to strike by further threatening the economic security and health care of UNAP members and their families,” said Frank Sims, UNAP Local 5098 president. “While some progress was made during last week’s negotiations, today’s exchange … [Read more...] about Rhode Island Hospital, UNAP Local 5098 to resume negotiations Aug. 17

PROVIDENCE – The United Nurses and Allied Professionals Local 5098 approved a five-year contract with Rhode Island Hospital late Wednesday night. The vote ends a contentious contract negotiation that led to a strike, both sides filing unfair labor practice complaints and both sides engaging in other hardball negotiating tactics that started when UNAP’s contact ended on June 30. The union had previously voted down two other negotiated contracts before approving the most recently negotiated contract Wednesday, which it said members approved “unanimously” Wednesday. “I’m proud of all UNAP members who stood up and raised their voice to win a fair and competitive contract at Rhode Island Hospital. This has been a long, and at times, difficult process, but I believe we made significant gains for front-line caregivers and our patients by remaining committed to the common principles and commitment to care that bind us,” said Frank … [Read more...] about UNAP approves negotiated Rhode Island Hospital contract

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island Hospital Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center researchers are recruiting volunteers for TANGO, a national clinical trial evaluating whether a new drug using antibodies to target tau protein in the brains of people with the disease is an effective treatment. The trial is sponsored by Biogen, based in Massachusetts. The drug, BIIB092, uses antibodies to target the tau protein that builds up in the brain cells of people with Alzheimer’s, attaching to the tau protein to prevent it from spreading through the brain, according to Rhode Island Hospital. Before Alzheimer’s symptoms appear, two proteins, tau and amyloid, begin accumulating in patients’ brains. The buildup of tau and amyloid can interfere with brain function and causes problems with memory and thinking. The experimental drug being used in TANGO attaches to the tau protein to prevent it from spreading throughout the brain. Only people with higher levels of amyloid … [Read more...] about Rhode Island Hospital recruiting Alzheimer’s patients for TANGO study
