New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza Resigns

Photo: William Farrington-Pool/Getty Images New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza announced Friday that he will be resigning from his role effective March 15. Meisha Porter, the current executive superintendent for the Bronx, will succeed Carranza, becoming the first Black woman to run the country’s largest public-school system. Speaking at a press conference Friday morning, Carranza cited the pandemic as he announced his decision to step down. “I know the pandemic has not been easy for you or for any New Yorker,” he said. “And make no mistake, I am a New Yorker — well not by birth, but by choice — a New Yorker who has lost 11 family and close childhood friends to this pandemic. Voters in New York report problems at polling locations

Voters in New York reported a number of problems at polling locations during the state's primary on Thursday. Some voters found themselves no longer on voter rolls, while others said they weren't able to vote after their party affiliation had been switched without their knowledge. New York was holding primaries for governor and attorney general on Thursday, with polls set to close at 9:00 p.m. ADVERTISEMENT Among those affected was Huffington Post editor-in-chief Lydia Polgreen who said in a tweet that her name had not been on voter rolls. Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's son, Dante de Blasio, was also among those who found themselves not on the rolls, the mayor said. Pentagon, FEMA open mass vaccination sites in Texas and New York

The Pentagon and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) opened COVID-19 vaccination sites in Texas and New York on Wednesday, with more slated for Florida and Pennsylvania in the coming days. Three vaccination centers were opened in Texas this week, with two similar sites in New York. A senior military official told reporters that four sites are to be set up in Florida, and one in Philadelphia, according to multiple outlets . Poll: Cuomo expands lead over Nixon in New York Dem primary

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has significantly widened his lead over left-wing challenger Cynthia Nixon in the New York Democratic gubernatorial primary, according to a new Quinnipiac poll . The poll has Cuomo leading by 59 percent to 23 percent for Nixon. In a Qunnipiac poll from May, Cuomo led Nixon 50-28 percent. Cuomo comes out ahead of Nixon in all gender, education, age, racial and regional groups, according to the new poll. "New Yorkers say 59-30 percent they want a gubernatorial candidate with experience in politics over someone new to it," Quinnipac University polling analyst Mary Snow said. "Democrats, non-white voters and women, in particular, lead the charge in that preference." Out Of This World! East Longmeadow Students Win Regional Competition For ‘City On The Moon’ Design

EAST LONGMEADOW (CBS) – A team of nine students from Birchland Park Middle School in East Longmeadow won a regional Future City competition for their creation that is out of this world. The group of creative young minds presented their design for a city on the surface of the moon. It’s made up of all recycled materials. The students went up against three other New England schools during a virtual competition last weekend and won.
