Never has a Real Housewives reunion felt so equable—so full of giggling and bonhomie. There was even, shock, self-deprecation and apologies. It made for very surreal viewing; some online even said boring. No matter where chief wife-puppeteer Andy Cohen poked his stirring-of-controversy stick, the Real Housewives of New York Season 9 reunion, which came in its traditional three parts, was full of smiles and cheer—and no one rising out of their seats to wave a manicured talon in another woman’s face. Or, indeed, throw a prosthetic leg. The RHONY women have never been the same since that non-reunion moment. But they have still argued and bitched; they knew, like any showperson, what the fans had come to expect. We saw the women go on their usual booze-drenched jolly, this time to Mexico, for Season 9. Although Tinsley Mortimer did indeed shout at Sonja Morgan for being controlling, and although Dorinda Medley freaked out at Bethenny Frankel and ended up stabbing … [Read more...] about Trump? NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – New York Attorney General Letitia James says the state is suing JUUL for allegedly fueling the youth vaping epidemic. The lawsuit also claims the company misled consumers and misrepresented its products by saying they’re a safer alternative to smoking. “There can be no doubt that JUUL’s aggressive advertising has significantly contributed to the public health crisis that has left youth in New York and across the country addicted to its products,” James said in a statement Tuesday. “By glamorizing vaping, while at the same time downplaying the nicotine found in vaping products, JUUL is putting countless New Yorkers at risk. I am prepared to use every legal tool in our arsenal to protect the health and safety of our youth.” WEB EXTRA: N.Y. A.G. Letitia James Announces Lawsuit Against JUUL The state health department estimates one million New Yorkers vape, and 220,000 of those users are under the age of 18. … [Read more...] about New York Sues JUUL For Allegedly Fueling Youth Vaping Epidemic
When Diane Arbus told her husband one day in 1955, “I can’t do it anymore. I am not going to do it anymore,” and walked out of their struggling fashion photography partnership, it was one of the most significant acts of renunciation in American photography. By the next year, she was learning about photography as a fine art from the legendary Austrian teacher Lisette Model, and soon after that she was venturing out into a new project, photographing the people she found outside her front door on the streets of New York. Her first roll of film in this endeavor she labeled simply “#1” as if aware that a new life had begun. The photographs that followed are gathered together for the first time in diane arbus: in the beginning, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s inaugural showcase at their new Brutalist offshoot in midtown Manhattan, the Met Bruer. Here are the famous and familiar, like Child with a toy hand grenade in Central Park, N.Y.C., … [Read more...] about Diane Arbus’s Strange and Surreal Visions of New York
The leg toss loomed large. The leg toss had been seen on trailers for weeks. The leg toss featured Aviva Drescher, a cast member of Bravo’s Real Housewives of New York City, taking her prosthetic leg off, slamming it on a table, claiming it was the only fake thing about her, and then it somehow ending up on the floor, shrieks of disbelief and open mouths all around. The leg toss had been seen by those who never watch The Real Housewives of New York City. They loftily asked those who watched The Real Housewives of New York City what was with the leg toss. The expression on their faces said: We’d rather be speaking of Kierkegaard or Vivaldi, but we will humor you and ask about this. “It’s a prosthetic leg,” they intoned on being given the basic overview, as if that bald fact confirmed all their prejudices about reality TV. Then they shook their heads at the tawdriness of it all. Back to the concerto, or a little light Plato, or some such. On the night … [Read more...] about ‘The Real Housewives of New York City’ Loses a Leg in Sixth-Season Finale
