The Hattiesburg City Council is studying a proposed rental ordinance designed as a registration tool for single-family and duplex properties that includes a safety assessment of the properties every other year. Andrew Ellard, Hattiesburg’s Director of Urban Development, presented the proposed ordinance to the City Council during a recent work session at City Hall. Ellard said the ordinance has several primary purposes. “No. 1 is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the occupants and the community; prevent blight and deterioration; promoting quality of life in our neighborhoods and maintaining property values,” he said. “The ordinance does not affect every residential property in the city, necessarily. It’s focused particularly on single-family and duplex properties. The ordinance committee recognized there would be differences between rental properties as single-family properties might compare to unoccupied properties, as it might compare to … [Read more...] about Rental ordinance being considered

Rolling start: What you need to know about Lincoln’s bike rental bikes
Lincoln’s rental bikes hit the streets this week, with little fanfare and just a couple of minor glitches.During their initial rollout Tuesday, the still-shiny bikes were taken on about 20 trips, said Jamie Granquist, manager of BikeLNK, which is contracting with the city to provide the bike share program. The bikes are available at 19 docks downtown and on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campuses, but four proved to be the most popular: 14th and N streets; the UNL student union; a Haymarket dock near HopCat and Hudl; and the dock at the U.S. Post Office.Twice, the docks didn’t record a customer’s return of a bike, Granquist said, and BikeLNK staff had to contact the customer and make sure the bike was secure. But the bikes themselves, and the kiosks that take your money, worked well.“It’s a pretty slick system,” she said. “We expect good things from it.”Here’s how it works:Three ways to pay* Use a credit or debit card at the … [Read more...] about Rolling start: What you need to know about Lincoln’s bike rental bikes

Fitch St. home where fire fatally injured 4 was unregistered, uninspected rental
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The owner of a Fitch Street home that erupted in flames last week, killing four people, failed to notify the city he had rented the home to the family, according to a Syracuse city official. By not telling the city it was a rental unit, the home would not have been subject to an inspection, a city official said. Zach Sanford, who owns the home at 253 Fitch St., said Tuesday in a brief interview with Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard outside the house that the property was a rental. Syracuse firefighters said the house's smoke alarms were not working. They did not say whether the alarms were tampered with, had dead batteries or stopped working some other way. Sanford said the smoke detectors functioned the last time he looked. "They were up," he said. "They were up." He walked away, declining further comment. Sanford's Facebook page expresses grief and shock at the losses of the victims, whom he said were close friends he's known a long time. Four people … [Read more...] about Fitch St. home where fire fatally injured 4 was unregistered, uninspected rental
