St. Louis — On the first night of life without Tomas Tatar, well, the Red Wings could have used his offensive ability. Streaky as he was, Tatar obviously had the ability to score some goals, and the Red Wings desperately needed that that one more goal from anybody Wednesday night, losing 2-1 to the St. Louis Blues. Goaltender Jimmy Howard was good, stopping 24 shots and keeping the Wings close, but the lone goal was Andreas Athanasiou’s 13th, at 18:15 of the third period. Offense has been a problem all season — the Red Wings rank 28th in the league in goals — but without Tatar, others will need to help out. “It depends if other guys score or not,” coach Jeff Blashill said after the loss, talking about compensating for Tatar’s loss. “Someone is (possessing) his minutes and they have to score. It’s not on a guy like Bert (Tyler Bertuzzi, who replaced Tatar on Dylan Larkin’s line), it’s on everybody. … [Read more...] about Red Wings’ post-Tatar era starts with loss to Blues

Sharks coach Pete DeBoer juggled his forward lines in advance of Friday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings in the opener of a six-game road trip. Patrick Marleau will center the second line with Joel Ward and Nikolay Goldobin, and Tomas Hertl will be the third line center between Tommy Wingels and Joonas Donskoi. Chris Tierney was with Matt Nieto and Mike Brown were on the fourth line. Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski and Melker Karlsson were on the first line, as they were for the majority of Tuesday’s loss to the New York Islanders. By moving Marleau to the middle, DeBoer wants to lessen the burden on Hertl and Tierney and also get better matchups against the speedy Wings without last change. After starting the season 4-5-1, Detroit has started to go in the right direction with four wins in five games. “This is a four-line team that rolls four lines at you,” DeBoer said. “So we need to have a four-line game here tonight. The Sharks traded forward prospect Dylan Sadowy to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday for a third round pick in the 2017 NHL draft. Sadowy, 20, had 70 points, including 45 goals, in 64 Ontario Hockey League games split between Saginaw and Barrie this season. The six-foot, 195-pound Sadowy was drafted by San Jose in 2014 in the third round (81st overall). According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the Red Wings had already agreed to terms on an entry-level contract with Sadowy. Sadowy would have re-entered the draft had he not agreed to terms with an NHL team. The Sharks had been looking to restock draft picks since making a handful of deals for NHL players over the past two years. They are without their first and third round selections for this year, their second round pick in 2017 and their second and third round choices in 2018. They sent this year’s No. 1 pick and forward Sean Kuraly to Boston last June for goalie Martin Jones, and their third rounder this year in the deal that … [Read more...] about Sharks trade Dylan Sadowy to Detroit Red Wings for 2017 third rounder
