Could Captain Shreve foresee Red River as economic engine for region?
What began as just a vital food source for Native Americans has transposed into a multi-billion dollar industry for Louisiana with the Red River harnessed into a vital transportation viaduct. The unique abilities of Captain Henry Miller Shreve, who secured $300,000 from the U.S. Government to clear “The Great Raft” in 1824, along with the foresight of Congress in 1968 to legislate the Red River Waterway Project, launching a series of locks and dams, has vaulted the river economic necessity. FIND IT HERE: 10 days of Shreveport jewels “Regarding the past, you could go all the way back to the Great Raft which, up until 1838, impeded navigation on the Red River. Captain Shreve and others had the foresight to see what a safe and navigable Red River could become,” said Colin Brown, Red River Waterway Commission’s assistant executive director. “Fast forward 178 years and the Red River has developed into a huge economic engine for the … [Read more...] about Could Captain Shreve foresee Red River as economic engine for region?
Red River Refuge offers outdoor recreational events
The Red River National Wildlife Refuge isn’t nearly the “hidden secret” it was just three years ago before the Visitors’ Center at the headquarters unit was constructed and the Arthur Teague Extension was completed.Since then, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service-operated refuge has blossomed into a jewel serving Bossier City and Shreveport residents in a variety of ways. FIND IT HERE: 10 days of Shreveport jewels “Our primary purpose is to provide habitat for wildlife, but we also conduct a number of educational programs for children and adults throughout the year,” said USFWS ranger Terri Jacobson. “The fact that our headquarters unit is extremely close to an urban area makes us much more accessible for school groups.”Nearly 5,000 people participated in environmental and interpretative programs at the refuge in 2015 with visitors coming from all 50 states and at least a dozen foreign countries.“Our numbers keep … [Read more...] about Red River Refuge offers outdoor recreational events
2017 candlelight ski, snowshoe and hike events light up state parks
If there are any guarantees in a Wisconsin winter, it's that it will be cold, dark and long — which makes any signs of warmth or light all the more welcome. After Christmas lights come down, candlelight at ski, snowshoe and hike events serves as a beacon in the winter abyss. The nighttime events feature trails lighted by candle luminaries, and they've grown in popularity over the years as Wisconsinites are desperate for something — anything! — to fight cabin fever in the winter.Thousands of people turned out for last winter's event at Lapham Peak, a unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Delafield. So many that traffic backed up for miles on I-94 and Highway C as people tried to get into the park, which closed its gates and had to turn people away when the event began. This year, the park will not be hosting a candlelight event. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources now includes a … [Read more...] about 2017 candlelight ski, snowshoe and hike events light up state parks
Step back in time at Black Hawk Ridge along the lower Wisconsin River
The centerpiece of the nearly 80,000-acre Lower Wisconsin State Riverway is, of course, the sandy-bottomed Wisconsin River, which winds unimpeded past bluffs and forested shoreline on its way to the Mississippi River 92 miles to the west. One thing that makes that stretch of river so remarkable: thousands of acres of undeveloped land along its banks that are protected as part of managed units, state natural areas and parks. The land has recently been in the spotlight as the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources looks to develop a new master plan for it.That includes the riverway's Black Hawk Unit (sometimes called Black Hawk Ridge), an 815-acre site about a mile southeast of the river near Sauk City."The Black Hawk Unit of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway is significant for the archaeological and historical resources as well as for the tremendous public recreation opportunities related to hiking and cross-country skiing, hunting, etc.," said Mark Cupp, executive director of the … [Read more...] about Step back in time at Black Hawk Ridge along the lower Wisconsin River
