A prosecutor in the Indiana county where a former FedEx employee allegedly shot and killed eight people said Monday that the suspected gunman never appeared for a hearing under Indiana’s “red flag” law after the man’s mother warned police that her son might try to commit “suicide by cop.” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears told reporters at a press conference that while a “red flag” hearing could have demonstrated to a judge that 19-year-old Brandon Scott Hole should not have a gun, authorities were unable to meet the two-week timeline required to hold a red flag hearing. Under Indiana’s 2005 red flag law, which also exists in several other states, police and courts can seize guns from people who have displayed the potential to commit violence. ADVERTISEMENT The FBI on Friday said that it had uncovered a shotgun from Hole’s bedroom in March 2020 after receiving the warning from his mother. A police probable cause narrative released Monday reported that while … [Read more...] about Authorities never sought ‘red flag’ hearing for FedEx shooter: prosecutor

Watch: Florida Sheriff Warns New Arrivals Not to ‘Vote the Stupid Way You Did up North’
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd warned intending Florida residents Monday not to “vote the stupid way you did up north” as he stood beside Governor Ron DeSantis during a press conference. “This is what we enjoy in Florida. This is the Florida we know and love,” Judd outlined while showing local residents enjoying Walt Disney World and the beach before moving on to explain why political leadership is important to guarantee the basic rights to be enjoyed by all citizens. Without citing the Democratic Party directly, Judd warned those moving to Florida they needed to vote differently than they may have in the states they were intent on fleeing. “We’re a special place, and there are millions and millions of people who like to come here. And quite frankly, we like to have them here. So we only want to share one thing as you move in hundreds a day: Welcome to Florida. But don’t register to vote and vote the stupid way you did up north, you’ll get what they got,” the sheriff added, … [Read more...] about Watch: Florida Sheriff Warns New Arrivals Not to ‘Vote the Stupid Way You Did up North’
Politico: John Cornyn Willing to Find ‘Common Ground’ on Gun Control
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is reportedly talking to Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and is willing to search out “common ground” for gun control. Politico noted Cornyn was not comfortable supporting the current universal background check gun control proposals Democrats have put forward but could be open to more narrow offers. Cornyn mentioned having “quiet conversations” with Murphy for the purposes of “[finding] common ground.” Murphy also reached out to Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN). Politico observed Braun “said that he’d be open to a narrower attempt, but not the kind of comprehensive legislation Democrats want.” WAVE 3 TV indicated Braun came out in favor of “better background checks” and a red flag law in August 2019. His support for the gun control measures came after Indiana adopted a red flag law at the state level. Despite the red flag law, Indiana witnessed a high profile, mass public attack at a FedEx facility on April 15, 2021. Colorado has a red flag law and … [Read more...] about Politico: John Cornyn Willing to Find ‘Common Ground’ on Gun Control
This won’t be the financial reckoning we expected
The next financial reckoning is coming, but it is adeptly camouflaging itself. A quarter-century of warnings about the catastrophic consequences of government overspending have lulled us into a sense of false security since the predicted collapse of the U.S. economy has not arrived. The stock market climbs, and post-COVID-19 predictions suggest even better economic results over the next several quarters . As a result, Democrats and Republicans have become comfortable clinging to a spend-what-you-want modern monetary theory that has all but obliterated sound fiscal policy. We foolishly believe that we have found the Holy Grail of economics. What we have found is self-delusional financial fantasy. There is no free lunch. Larry Summers , the respected former Treasury secretary, indicted the country’s leaders – Republican and Democrat – for piling up mountains of debt and printing money. He called it the “least responsible fiscal macroeconomic policy we’ve had for the last 40 … [Read more...] about This won’t be the financial reckoning we expected
Vaccine passports — A technical, not an ideological issue
Peter Baldwin is the author of " Fighting the First Wave: Why the Coronavirus Was Tackled so Differently across the Globe ," just out from Cambridge University Press. The views expressed in this commentary are his own. Read more opinion on CNN. (CNN) Forgive me for thinking that the midst of a global pandemic that cost millions of lives and trillions of dollars in economic loss is not an ideal moment to parse the fine points of individual rights. Covid has already sparked political fires over how to rein it in. Peter Baldwin Privacy advocates have undercut contact tracing apps' use. This technology would have permitted us to go about our business -- unless we were unfortunate enough to contract infection. Then we would have been alerted to isolate. That was certainly preferable to the alternative we were left with -- most everyone stuck at home in lockdown. The claims that mask-wearing in public violates civil rights is too … [Read more...] about Vaccine passports — A technical, not an ideological issue
