Report: DHS Is Allowing Injured Migrants to Stay

President Joe Biden’s deputies are welcoming illegal migrants who are injured while trying to evade border barriers. The Los Angeles Times reported February 26: On a Feb. 18 call with advocates and lawyers, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas grew frustrated when asked about other cases in which border authorities expelled injured migrants under Title 42 [anti-epidemic rules] despite some being unable to walk after falling off the wall, according to [Linda] Corchado, who was on the call. “He was just appalled that people are jumping the wall,” Corchado said. “The point is with Title 42, that’s what happens … people are getting more and more desperate.” Corchado is the Texas-based director of legal services at Las Américas Immigrant Advocacy Center. She is also representing other migrants who were rescued from a snowstorm as they tried to sneak into American’s homeland. “So they’re trying to climb up the wall on the Mexican side, and they’re falling … [Read more...] about Report: DHS Is Allowing Injured Migrants to Stay

How COVID-19 could make us healthier

COVID-19 has exposed countless weaknesses and inequities in our health care systems, with long-term effects that will be felt for generations to come. Yet it has also given us an important opportunity to improve where we have failed. Public health is now deeply embedded in our consciousness as a top priority. The pandemic has already helped facilitate long-overdue improvements in our health care system, such as the rapid expansion in virtual care and greater awareness of racial health disparities. But further progress will not be inevitable without more comprehensive reforms. Some positive changes will come in the form of how we adapt our behavior to protect ourselves and others. After almost a year of vigilant hand washing, sanitizing and mask-wearing, many of us are recoiling at how unsanitary our pre-pandemic actions were. The idea of powering through a cold or illness at the office is no longer to be celebrated. Instead, we are left with much greater respect for employees who … [Read more...] about How COVID-19 could make us healthier

Woke K-12 ‘Action Civics’ Initiative Called ‘GOP Suicide’

The same Washington establishment that championed the Common Core standards and encouraged more federal involvement in education has endorsed a civics initiative that seeks to indoctrinate K-12 students into woke “action” political organizing, under the guise of restoring “unity.” In an op-ed Monday in the Wall Street Journal , six former U.S. education secretaries, three Democrats and three Republicans, endorsed a civics initiative that, they claim, will help instill in American students an understanding of U.S. History that is “complete and honest.” Stanley Kurtz, senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, who extensively investigated the Common Core standards and the revised Advanced Placement U.S. History curriculum, wrote at National Review, the “Educating for American Democracy” (EAD) initiative is essentially “dominated by the woke Left, with a sprinkling of conservatives designed to create the illusion of bipartisanship.” Kurtz said the adoption … [Read more...] about Woke K-12 ‘Action Civics’ Initiative Called ‘GOP Suicide’

In America, women are frontliners of change

They say that “Behind every successful man, there is a strong woman.” They’re wrong. The truth is, behind any successful community — any successful people, or any successful nation — there are countless unheralded and unnamed strong women. All of us have witnessed women standing in the gap and on the front lines, molding and shaping the moments of our lives. As Women’s History Month unfolds, we should pause to consider how women in America have helped to shape our history, individually and as a nation. I think about my grandmothers. Both were sharecroppers who lost their husbands at an early age. They spent their lives picking other people’s cotton and cleaning other people’s houses. Despite their constant struggles, they managed to raise their own children, their grandchildren — and other people’s children. ADVERTISEMENT My grandmothers were frontliners of change. I think about my mother working two jobs for most of my childhood, never letting us see her worry about … [Read more...] about In America, women are frontliners of change

Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro called out the 2021 Golden Globes for a lack of Latino representation. Ahead of the 78th annual Golden Globe awards, it came to light that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which votes for the awards, has no Black voting members. While hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as well as late-night comedians lambasted the HFPA over its lack of Black inclusion, Castro took the HFPA to task for underrepresenting artwork in film and television done by the Latino community in 2020. "Latinos are almost completely missing at the @goldenglobes—it’s unsurprising and unacceptable," he tweeted on the day of the show . "The film industry must address the pernicious lack of opportunity and representation of Latino Americans. The stories that … [Read more...] about Texas Rep.
