European elites that mourn the loss of Britain — and the nation’s significant financial contributions — from the bloc have themselves to blame, Hungarian leader Viktor Orban has said in a wide-ranging interview with the German press. While the British people voted to leave the European Union, it was the Eurocrats in Brussels steering the project whose choices had left the British feeling they had no choice but to go their own way, Orban said. Responding to a question by a journalist from German magazine FOCUS , asking him to elaborate on historic comments he made saying that Brexit could have been avoided , the Hungarian Prime Minister was clear that while the European Union could probably get away with pushing around less powerful nations, a leading state like the UK would inevitably decide to do something about it. Study Finds Online Bots Helped Hype GameStop Stock
A recent white paper from PiiQ Media says that bots on several social media sites were building coordinated hype around so-called “meme stocks” like GameStop, Reuters reports. PiiQ Media found that tens of thousands of bots on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have been pushing meme assets, according to a report provided to the Daily Caller by the Massachusetts-based cybersecurity firm. However, the assessment was inconclusive on how influential the bots actually were in the trading phenomenon that captured media headlines and American’s attention in late January to early February, the report said. ‘Recipe For More Shuttered Businesses’: Small Businesses Speak Out Against Minimum Wage Hike
Small business organizations are speaking out against a potential minimum wage hike, saying the plan will only cause more small businesses to shutter amid a fragile economy. The National Federation of Independent Business said that “Congress should not saddle [small businesses] with a costly new mandate that will further damage the fragile economic recovery,” in a statement . “More than doubling the federal minimum wage while small businesses across America are barely surviving shutdowns due to an unprecedented pandemic is a recipe for more shuttered businesses and millions more job losses,” the American Farm Bureau Federation said in a statement. “On behalf of Main Street employers across America, we strongly oppose the Raise the Wage Act of 2021.” The U.S. Chamber of Commerce opposed the minimum wage hike, noting it does “not reflect a data-driven approach that incorporates wage-rate differences between business sectors and business locations,” in a statement. House Democrats are hoping to vote on legislation establishing the investigative panel before they leave town in mid-March, giving them a matter of days to try to reach a deal with Republicans. But clashes among congressional leaders over both the structure and scope of the panel are threatening to derail the commission before it even gets underway.
