A terrier mix named Nora rescued from a dumpster in Kansas made herself at home at the Wichita Police Department’s Patrol East. Captain Kevin Kochenderfer said when a woman came into the station on South Edgemoor not long ago, she told officers she heard what sounded like screaming or crying coming from a dumpster outside, KWCH reported on Friday. Kochenderfer investigated and was surprised to find little Nora, who was three to four months old, inside a crate covered in garbage. Officers quickly brought her inside the building and cleaned her up. “Probably for a month and a half, staff and I rotated who was going to take care of the dog for the evening, and eventually after about a month, she ended up at my house permanently,” the captain explained. Now, the fiesty pup accompanies him to work every day and serves as a member of the squad. She also goes on calls. “I take her to QuikTrip. I just went to QuikTrip and everyone says, ‘that’s a police dog, huh?’ And I say, … [Read more...] about WATCH – Dog Rescued from Dumpster Finds Home with Police Department: ‘It Worked Out Great’

Bay of Pigs has lessons for our time
It was 60 years ago this week that an uncertain new president launched an ill-conceived military venture of astonishing naivety. The scheme was straightforward and audacious: 1,400 U.S.-trained Cuban exiles would land at the Bay of Pigs and ignite a populist uprising that would topple a Soviet-backed communist revolutionary by the name of Fidel Castro . It was an unmitigated disaster. With an army of 25,000, Castro quickly quashed hopes of an uprising as his forces killed more than a hundred exiles and imprisoned most of the others, and President John F. Kennedy suffered an embarrassing global setback just three months into his presidency. ADVERTISEMENT Worse, the disaster came just weeks after JFK had launched his Alliance for Progress , which was supposed to set a new tone in U.S.-Latin American relations. Rather than continue to back right-wing regimes that supported U.S. interests in the region, the United States would provide billions in aid in exchange for … [Read more...] about Bay of Pigs has lessons for our time

Protests erupt after Black man killed by police in Minnesota
Protests erupted in Minnesota overnight after an unarmed black man was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop. The Brooklyn Center officer shot the man after learning that he had an outstanding warrant and attempting to arrest him on Sunday afternoon, authorities said. Relatives of Daunte Wright, the 20-year-old victim, said Wright drove for a short distance after he was shot, crashed his car and died at the scene, the Star Tribune reported . Officials believe cameras worn by the officers and mounted on the dashboards of police vehicles at the scene captured the incident, the newspaper reported. ADVERTISEMENT Photos and video taken late Sunday night showed hundreds of protesters gathered in Brooklyn Center, just north of Minneapolis, where the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of murdering George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, continues this week. Demonstrators in Brooklyn Center chanted Wright's name late Sunday and climbed … [Read more...] about Protests erupt after Black man killed by police in Minnesota
