DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CBS / AP) — A spacecraft from the United Arab Emirates, created in partnership with UC Berkeley and other U.S. universities, swung into orbit around Mars on Tuesday in a triumph for the Arab world’s first interplanetary mission. Ground controllers at the UAE’s space center in Dubai rose to their feet and broke into applause when word came that the craft, called Amal, Arabic for Hope, had reached the end of its seven-month, 300-million-mile journey and had begun circling the red planet, where it will gather detailed data on Mars’ atmosphere. The orbiter fired its main engines for 27 minutes in an intricate, high-stakes maneuver that slowed the craft enough for it to be captured by Mars’ gravity. The Space Launch System’s (SLS) development by NASA and a number of aerospace contractors proves that rocket science, which is really engineering to build spacecraft, is a term that describes something that is truly difficult for a reason. On Jan. 16, NASA performed the last test of the so-called green run series on the core stage of the SLS. During the test, all four main engines were to be fired for eight minutes. Unfortunately, the software commanded that the test be shut down after about one minute because of major component failure (MCF) in one of the engines. Later, NASA announced that the premature shutdown was caused by “conservative” test parameters and that the core stage was in “good condition.” If the fault had been experienced during an actual launch, the SLS would have continued to fly. While Audi's most recent electric vehicles have been SUVs, as have many new electric vehicles, the E-tron is designed to appeal to those who put a premium on the driving feel of a car, with its lower center of gravity and better handling. The E-tron GT will compete against cars like the Tesla Model S, as well as the Porsche Taycan, which is a close relative of the E-tron GT. Both Audi and Porsche are subsidiaries of Germany's Volkswagen AG and the two companies cooperated on the fundamental engineering of these cars.
