Japan edged out Singapore to become the nation with the best passport for traveling by being named to the top spot on the Henley Passport Index on Wednesday, according to The Taipei Times. The London-based residence and citizenship advisory firm announced Japanese travelers now have visa-free and visa-on-arrival access after being given visa-free access to Myanmar, allowing the citizens of the island nation open to travel across more than 190 destinations. Singapore, the previous number one, has visa-free and visa-on-arrival access to 189 countries, so it was moved to second place on the list.Third place is shared between South Korea, France, and Germany since all three have visa-free and visa-on-arrival access to 188 countries, with France having moved up on the list just last Friday after it gained visa-free access to Uzbekistan. Last year, Google announced its Google Fiber contest, where communities could compete to receive Internet connection speeds at one gigabit per second. Over a thousand communities, counties, and municipalities applied. Google recently announced that it had selected two cities, Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri, as the winners. Many groups, including universities, economic development organizations, and local government leaders, pulled together to create the most appealing proposal possible, but now that they've "won" the contest, the region now has to decide how to use its newfound computing power. As Donald Trump arrives in Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum, more Americans think the president is making the U.S. position in the world weaker, not stronger. But members of his own party see things differently, according to recent CBS News polling. More than seven in 10 of Republicans say America's position in the world is stronger with Mr. Trump in the White House. Most Democrats and a slim majority of independents disagree. The President has pledged to make the U.S. military stronger and that resonates with members of his own party. A majority of Republicans (59 percent) say it's more important for the U.S. to be respected for its military power, while most Democrats think it's more important for people in the world to like the U.S. for its policies. The United States ranks behind countries including Algeria and Kazakhstan in a new report that rates the best and worst countries in the world to be a girl. The report, released today by Save the Children in conjunction with International Day of the Girl, looked at factors including schooling, teen pregnancy, child marriage, maternal deaths and number of female representatives in national government to determine the ranking. The U.S. came in 32nd of the 144 countries in the rankings. Nations at the bottom of the index include Niger, Chad, Central African Republic, Mali and Somalia, while countries at the top include Sweden, Finland, Norway, Netherlands and Belgium.
