Myanmar Envoy Appeals for No-Fly Zone, Arms Embargo
Myanmar's U.N. envoy, who was appointed by the democratically elected government, appealed to the international community Friday to protect civilians from the country's military with a no-fly zone, arms embargo and targeted sanctions. "It is necessary to have strong and urgent actions on the U.N. Security Council in order to save the lives of innocent civilians in Myanmar," Kyaw Moe Tun told an informal meeting of the Security Council. "Collective strong action is needed immediately. Time is of the essence for us, please take action now." The envoy, who made headlines in February publicly opposing the military coup, called on the international community to target sanctions against the businesses linked to the military and to their families. He also urged the suspension of foreign investments until the democratically elected government is restored. "I wish to stress that the international community and the U.N. Security Council have the responsibility to use all necessary means to … [Read more...] about Myanmar Envoy Appeals for No-Fly Zone, Arms Embargo
Myanmar Military Sentences 19 to Death, Says Anti-Coup Protests Dwindling
Nineteen people have been sentenced to death in Myanmar for killing an associate of an army captain, the military-owned Myawaddy TV station said Friday. These are the first such sentences announced in public since a February 1 coup and crackdown on protesters. The report said the killing took place on March 27 in the North Okkalapa district of Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city. Martial law has been declared in the district, allowing courts-martial to pronounce sentences. The military rulers who overthrew an elected government said on Friday that a protest campaign against its rule was dwindling because people wanted peace, and that it would hold elections within two years, the first timeframe it has given for a return to democracy. Troops fired rifle grenades at anti-coup protesters on Friday in the town of Bago, near Yangon, witnesses and news reports said. At least 10 people were killed, and their bodies were piled inside a pagoda, they said. Myanmar Now news and Mawkun, an … [Read more...] about Myanmar Military Sentences 19 to Death, Says Anti-Coup Protests Dwindling
Exclusive–Kobach: The Kansas Legislature Votes to Reduce the Age for Concealed Carry
On Thursday—the very same day that President Biden announced his executive actions to restrict certain firearms—the Kansas legislature took a bold step in the opposite direction. The Kansas legislature passed a pro-gun rights bill that expands the right to keep and bear arms in multiple ways. In the morning, the Senate passed HB 2058 by a vote of 30-8. Then, later in the evening the same day, the House passed the Senate version of the bill by a vote of 80-43. The Kansas legislation does three things. First and foremost, it reduces the minimum concealed carry age from 21 to 18. In order to carry a concealed firearm, 18-20 year-olds would have to pass concealed-carry training and carry a permit. Kansans over the age of 21 are already allowed by Kansas’s “constitutional carry” statute to carry a concealed firearm without a permit. Second, the bill recognizes the validity of other states’ concealed carry permits, provided the state has a reciprocity agreement with … [Read more...] about Exclusive–Kobach: The Kansas Legislature Votes to Reduce the Age for Concealed Carry
Boxing Champion/Senator Manny Pacquiao Urges China to Stop Philippines Invasion
Philippine Senator Manny Pacquiao on Thursday urged China to halt its “creeping occupation” of the Philippines’ Juan Felipe Reef in the South China Sea and recall a fleet of Chinese fishing vessels moored near the structure since early March. “Its [China’s] militia fishing boats that have encroached in areas surrounding the [Julian Felipe Reef]. … As a friend and neighbor, I appeal to the Chinese leadership to stop this creeping occupation and use your authority to disperse these Chinese fishermen,” the senator said in a statement issued April 8. Pacquiao said he backed Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana’s formal appeal to Beijing on March 21 to disperse its vessels from Juan Felipe reef. “We call on the Chinese to stop this incursion and immediately recall these boats violating our maritime rights and encroaching into our sovereign territory,” Lorenzana said in a statement. The Philippine military believes the 220-strong fishing fleet anchored at Juan Felipe … [Read more...] about Boxing Champion/Senator Manny Pacquiao Urges China to Stop Philippines Invasion
