The experience in Texas should be a warning to other states: If an energy-abundant, rich state that likes to invest in infrastructure can suffer a significant energy crisis, then it can happen anywhere. Overall, the nation’s infrastructure is weak — with crumbling bridges, sagging power lines and leaky pipes — and Texas serves as the canary in the coal mine that more troubles might be looming. Texas is the world’s third largest natural gas producer and has built more new power plants and transmission line capacity during the past 15 years than most countries did during that time. Yet, it failed. ADVERTISEMENT As a state with significant portions in a semi-arid climate, Texas prepares the grid for the hot afternoons of the summer. But the state experiences arctic fronts more often than Texans care to admit. All told, it was a recipe for failure and it can happen elsewhere. In fact, extreme weather has caused significant blackouts in California because of wildfire … [Read more...] about What happened in Texas is only the beginning

AP: Golden Globes, Drained of Glamour, Kicks Off Amid Race Controversy
NEW YORK (AP) — When drained of glamour, what’s left of the Golden Globes? That’s one of the biggest questions heading into the 78th annual awards on Sunday night. The show, postponed two months from its usual early-January perch, will have little of what makes the Globes one of the frothiest and glitziest events of the year. Due to the pandemic, there will be no parade of stars down the red carpet outside the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. Its hosts, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, will be on different sides of the country . Watch below: More than any award show, the Globes revel in being an intimate banquet of stars. When the show begins at 8 p.m. EST on NBC, with Poehler in Beverly Hills and Fey in New York’s Rainbow Room, the circumstances will test the Globes telecast like never before. FACT CHECK: Trump clings to his core election falsehoods in CPAC speech
WASHINGTON — Donald Trump clung to his core election falsehoods in his first post-presidential speech, wrongly blamed wind power for the catastrophic power failures in Texas and revived a variety of the baseless claims that saturated his time in office, on immigration, the economy and more. The power outages during the severe February storm in Texas were primarily due to failures in natural gas, coal and nuclear energy systems, not wind and solar. Those traditional sources were responsible for nearly twice as many outages as frozen wind turbines and … [Read more...] about FACT CHECK: Trump clings to his core election falsehoods in CPAC speech

King Maha Vajiralongkorn, accompanied by Queen Suthida, waved as he arrived at Bangkok's Sanam Luang ceremonial ground. Supporters of the monarchy held Thai and yellow royal flags to welcome them, with some cheering "Long live the king." The crowd wore yellow shirts, the color associated with the royal institution. The king led the crowd in a candlelit tribute to his late father, whose giant image was at the center of the stage set up outside the ornate Grand Palace. Although King Bhumibhol Adulyadej died four years ago, his birthday remains on the national calendar as Fathers Day.
