(CNN) — Alamo Drafthouse, the movie theater chain beloved by fans for its boozy milkshakes, theme nights and strict no-talking rules, has filed for bankruptcy protection. The Austin-based company, which owns about 40 theaters in the United States, filed for Chapter 11 and agreed to sell “substantially all its assets” to a group of lenders. Alamo put the blame for its bankruptcy on the pandemic, which has temporarily shuttered movie theaters in several states. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Support on the Rise, Approval 53%
Gov. Ron DeSantis’s popularity is on the rise in Florida, a Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy survey reveals. The survey, taken Feb. 24-28 among 625 registered voters in the Sunshine State, found the Republican governor’s approval rating clocking in at 53 percent. That represents an eight-point bump from the 45 percent approval he saw in a July Mason-Dixon poll, which had his disapproval at 49 percent. His current disapproval stands at 42 percent. His popularity remains on the upswing among the conservative base, specifically, as well. While former President Trump dominated in the CPAC straw poll, garnering 55 percent of the vote, DeSantis came in second with 21 percent of the vote. They were the only two candidates to see double-digit support. In a scenario absent of Trump, DeSantis took a dominant lead over the rest of the field, garnering 43 percent support, followed by South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) with 11 percent and Donald Trump Jr. with eight percent. … [Read more...] about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Support on the Rise, Approval 53%
David Shor on Why Trump Was Good for the GOP and How Dems Can Win in 2022
He made America’s representative institutions greatly biased in favor of Republicans. Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer Photo: REUTERS/Yuri Gripas In the United States, every season is campaign season. Four months after America last went to the polls, Democrats are still refining their autopsies of the 2020 race and already governing with an eye toward the 2022 midterms. Meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, Republicans are trying to figure out just how firm Donald Trump’s grip on their party really is — and debating whether that grip should be stronger or weaker. To gain some insight into these matters, Intelligencer turned to our favorite socialist proponent of ruthlessly poll-driven campaigning, David Shor. A veteran of the 2012 Obama campaign, Shor is currently head of data science at OpenLabs, a progressive nonprofit. We spoke with him last week about how his analysis of the 2020 election has changed since November, what Democrats need to do to keep Congress … [Read more...] about David Shor on Why Trump Was Good for the GOP and How Dems Can Win in 2022
Rep. Steube: Florida ‘Absolutely’ Serves as a Model for GOP to Win National Elections
ORLANDO, Florida — The Republican Party should “absolutely” look to Florida as a model ahead of the 2022 elections, Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) said during an exclusive interview with Breitbart News on Friday. Appearing at CPAC, Steube pointed to the America First policies touted by former President Trump, which proved to be popular even among non-traditional Republican voters. “So I hope we’re going to focus on those America First policies and concentrate on that going into 2022. We only have to take five House seats back to take the majority in Congress. You don’t hear anybody in the mainstream media talking about that, because that doesn’t affect their purpose and their liberal ideology, but five seats is not a lot of seats,” he said, noting that redistricting will likely bode well for the GOP. “We’ve got redistricting here in Florida. With the census data, Florida is probably going to pick up one or two seats by population. Texas is going to pick up a seat. I think maps are … [Read more...] about Rep.
