Alissa Zhu Springfield News-Leader Published 11:00 PM EST Dec 26, 2018 In a former parking lot next to the Greene County Jail, six 52-foot semi-trailers sit surrounded by chain-link fence topped with swirls of razor wire. Within the stainless steel walls, 108 men eat, sleep and live for days, weeks or months at a time, confined in a space that, per man, is less than half the size of a ping-pong table. Most are awaiting trial. Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott estimates that about 98 percent of people being held in jail have been charged with a crime and are waiting for an official declaration of guilt — or innocence. About a year ago, the trailer jail began housing inmates. It was heralded by county officials as the first of its kind in the country and a cost-effective temporary solution to a jail overcrowding problem that has plagued Greene County for more than a decade. By City News Service | PUBLISHED: November 18, 2018 at 11:01 pm | UPDATED: November 18, 2018 at 11:03 pm SANTA ANA — A 43-year-old Westminster man has pleaded guilty and was immediately sentenced to 40 hours of community service for helping three inmates who escaped from the Orange County Jail in January 2016. Tung Nguyen pleaded guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor count of being an accessory after the fact. He was placed on three years of informal probation. Nguyen was originally charged with a felony, but it was knocked down to a misdemeanor as part of the plea deal. Nguyen provided money and beer to one of the escapees, Bac Tien Duong, after the trio arrived at Nguyen’s home following the breakout, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Duong, 46, Hossein Nayeri, 39, and Jonathan Tieu, 23, escaped sometime between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Jan. 22, 2016, according to the Sheriff’s Department. The founder and owner of L. Bamberger & Co, began a retail empire with his partners in 1892 when they opened a glamorous new store in Newark that made him a multimillionaire by middle age. Considered Newark's "adopted son," Bamberger was known for his extraordinary philanthropy and retail prowess. He is best remembered for gifting a building to house the Newark Museum and for the endowment that founded the world-renowned Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, according to Bamberger biographer Linda Forgosh. When he died at age 89 his friend Albert Einstein was among the family and close friends at a private service.
