Conserving land is an essential element of any effort to battle climate change, a fact highlighted by the 30x30 plan supported by President Biden Joe Biden Biden offers support to union organizing efforts Senate Democrats nix 'Plan B' on minimum wage hike Kavanaugh dismays conservatives by dodging pro-Trump election lawsuits MORE . Fulfilling a campaign pledge, one of Biden’s first actions as president was to sign an executive order that established the goal of conserving a third of America’s land and ocean waters by 2030. Meeting that goal will not be easy, but it can be achieved if we harness both private and government resources and ensure more Americans can participate in land conservation efforts. The good news is that ocean conservation is already within reach of this threshold, with 26 percent of U.S. waters already protected . We have significantly more work to do when it comes to land, with only 12 percent conserved. ADVERTISEMENT The … [Read more...] about Biden should use private partnerships to save US lands

Internet security firm Cyfirma reported Monday that hackers linked to the Chinese government are attacking the computer systems of two major Indian pharmaceutical companies involved in producing vaccines for the Wuhan coronavirus. Cyfirma, based in Singapore and Tokyo, told Reuters on Monday the attacks are coming from a well-known hacker group designated Advanced Persistent Threat 10 (APT10) and commonly known as “Stone Panda.” APT10 has been active since 2009, generally targeting U.S. and allied defense, healthcare, and aerospace computer systems. Its attacks are mostly designed to steal information or sabotage foreign companies, giving Chinese commercial entities a competitive advantage. In this case, APT10 is apparently trying to steal coronavirus vaccine data to help China promote its own questionable vaccine products. The targets of the hacking campaign Cyfirma identified are Bharat Biotech and the Serum Institute of India (SII), with the … [Read more...] about Report: Chinese State Hackers Target Indian Coronavirus Vaccine Makers

Mike Pence, the sycophant exiled from his hero’s kingdom. Photo: Drew Angerer/Getty Images For very nearly four years, Mike Pence managed to become the all-time exemplar of obsequiousness in a job inherently characterized by that quality. As the toadiest toady in vice-presidential history, the white-domed Hoosier was like the loudest barker in the kennel, the quietest bookworm in the library, or the silliest clown in the circus. He didn’t just slavishly submit to the Big Boss’s every erratic whim; Pence sang cringingly frequent hymns of praise to Trump’s “broad shoulders” and other manly leadership virtues. Then January 6, 2021, happened, when the veep notoriously refused to overturn the Biden-Harris ticket’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. Trump repeatedly warned Pence against the “betrayal” involved in refusing POTUS’s demand that he exceed the purely clerical vice-presidential powers laid out in the Electoral Count Act of 1887 . And when Pence made it … [Read more...] about Is Mike Pence Finished in MAGA-Land?
Native American protesters helped delay the Resolution Copper mining project planned for Arizona, after officials on Monday temporarily blocked the transfer of federal lands for the project for at least several months. Tom Torres, the acting forest supervisor at the Tonto National Forest, the location of the land in question, announced that the Department of Agriculture directed him to withdraw the environmental impact statement that the Trump administration issued five days before his presidency ended. Due to a previous congressional law, the 2,422 acres of the Oak Flat section would immediately be transferred to Resolution Copper 60 days after the environmental impact statement. But the Forest Service’s Monday actions stopped the automatic turnover. ADVERTISEMENT In his statement, Torres said the department will use the extra time for a “thorough review based on significant input received from collaborators, partners, and the public,” including the concerns … [Read more...] about Native American protesters help delay Arizona mining project
