Avalanche forward Brandon Saad to miss Wild game in anticipation of newborn child
Avalanche forward Brandon Saad was absent from the team’s morning skate Wednesday, initially prompting health concerns, before coach Jared Bednar cleared the confusion with a smile. Saad will miss Colorado’s game against the Minnesota Wild for the best of reasons. “They’re due to have a baby,” Bednar said. “Him and his wife, they went into the hospital last night. We’re hoping and praying that everything is going good there. She was due to have the baby this week and it just so happened to land on today.” Saad is in his first season with the Avalanche after being acquired via trade from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for defensemen Nikita Zadorov and Anton Lindholm. Saad, with now 15 games on his Avs resume, is the team’s second-leading goal scorer (six). He also has four assists. But hockey wasn’t a priority for Saad on Wednesday with full organizational support from the Avalanche as his family grows. Saad, 28, opened up about fatherhood in a Chicago Tribune feature … [Read more...] about Avalanche forward Brandon Saad to miss Wild game in anticipation of newborn child
“The layup was there”: Inside the Nuggets’ late-game disaster vs. the Wizards
Jamal Murray only deserved partial blame for the broken play that cost the Nuggets, at minimum, an overtime session against the Washington Wizards on Thursday night. Down 112-110 with six seconds remaining, Nikola Jokic tapped a defensive rebound into the eager hands of Murray. Of the first five players to cross halfcourt, four were Nuggets. The lone Wizard, Bradley Beal, pulled up near the 3-point line and committed to Murray, leaving both Michael Porter Jr. and Facu Campazzo unattended. Murray said he expected Porter to cut to the hoop for what would’ve been an uncontested layup sending the game into overtime. But when he didn’t, and instead sunk to the far corner despite no one being in the paint, that removed Denver’s easiest path to a bucket. “There should’ve definitely been a cut to the rim,” Porter said. “At the beginning, we all just were thinking, get behind the 3-point line. Let’s win it and go home.” Though Porter conceded that, with the benefit of hindsight, he’d … [Read more...] about “The layup was there”: Inside the Nuggets’ late-game disaster vs. the Wizards
Adam Silver lays out reasons for NBA All-Star Game
MIAMI — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has heard all the reasons why the league should not have an All-Star Game in Atlanta next weekend. He has two reasons why the league should: the fans and the game’s economy. Silver, in an interview with The Associated Press, said the fact that about 100 million votes were cast by fans for All-Star starters shows that the people who follow the game globally wanted the league’s midseason showcase to be played. And the league, he said, didn’t want to disappoint them. “It’s the largest factor, the amount of engagement we get from our fans around All-Star,” Silver said. “Historically, in the modern digital age, we have roughly 100 million people vote for our All-Stars, and we came out about the same this year even with a shortened voting period.” Players have raised some questions about why the game is necessary and the risks involved in playing it during a pandemic. The league has said it will fly players into Atlanta privately, keep them in a … [Read more...] about Adam Silver lays out reasons for NBA All-Star Game

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — There is a new treatment that is getting young people with knee problems back in the game. “I was playing in my regional championship game for Slippery Rock roller hockey. I felt the pop. At first, I thought it was an ACL, MCL, meniscus. It was my last Nationals ever. So I really just wanted to play it off until the end of the season. That Monday, I still couldn’t walk. I was dragging my right leg behind me. Tuesday, I went to get out of bed, still could barely walk,” said Nick Smith. READ MORE: Pa.
