Hong Kong (CNN)A growing number of Chinese military scientists are using their research collaborations with Western universities to take their host country's expertise back home to improve China's own technology, a new Australian report claimed Tuesday. The report, by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), called out what it saw as a lack of caution among Western governments and universities in the face of an alleged concerted campaign by Beijing to advance the Chinese military using foreign technology. "I just haven't seen any universities acknowledge the risk of this. They haven't really made that step publicly distinguishing between beneficial collaboration with China and cooperation with the Chinese military which may not be in our interests," Alex Joske, report author and ASPI researcher, told CNN. The ASPI is a non-partisan think tank, partly funded by the Australian government. CNN has reached out to the Chinese Foreign Ministry for comment. Since 2007, more than … [Read more...] about Chinese army scientists exploiting Western universities, report says

It's a deep hole. Yet it's not a hole that prevents the theory from working. Quantum physics is, by any measure, astonishingly successful. It's the theory that underpins nearly all of modern technology, from the silicon chips buried in your phone to the LEDs in its screen, from the nuclear hearts of the most distant space probes to the lasers in the supermarket checkout scanner. It explains why the sun shines and how your eyes can see. Quantum physics works. Yet the hole remains: Despite the wild success of the theory, we don't really understand what it says about the world around us. The mathematics of the theory makes incredibly accurate predictions about the outcomes of experiments and natural phenomena. In order to do that so well, the theory must have … [Read more...] about The Puzzle Of Quantum Reality

What authoritarians do: Attack the apolitical administration... Deepak Chopra, MD, Rudolph E. Tanzi, PhD and Paul J. Mills, PhD It is much easier to understand what makes people unhappy than to understand what makes them happy. Happiness is undermined or destroyed by violence, poverty, illness, and other external factors, leading to the inner states of depression, anxiety, and misery. Here, the link between inner and outer poses no mystery. It seems common-sensical that by reversing the causes of unhappiness, happiness will result. But this is only partially true. Happiness, the sense of general wellbeing, isn’t the same as removing a rock from your shoe. You have to lay a foundation upon which … [Read more...] about Where Does Wellbeing Come From? What authoritarians do: Attack the apolitical administration... By Deepak Chopra, MD, William C Bushell, PhD, Ryan Castle, David Vago, PhD, Rudolph E. Tanzi, Ph.D. Ten years ago researchers began to focus on inflammation as a link to disease. They stood out in that they did not emphasize the acute redness and swelling that accompanies the site of a wound or burn as it heals, which is known as acute inflammation. Rather, they discovered clues were leading to something more subtle – a low-grade, chronic inflammation that has few if any overt symptoms. This kind of everyday inflammation has now been linked to an overwhelming majority of serious lifestyle disorders, including hypertension, heart disease, … [Read more...] about Is Inflammation the Key to Aging?

Flake cannot win in Trump's GOP, and that's the problem By Deepak Chopra, MD, William Bushell, PhD, Ryan Castle, David Vago, PhD, Peder Olofsson MD, PhD, Mark Lambert Until very recently, it was fairly unthinkable that our own bodies pose a greater threat to health than any outside disease. Most people have never heard of one of the greatest plagues of the 21st century, because it is caused by one of the most subtle, complex reactions in the body. This plague is inflammation, which in medical terms is the ultimate two-edged sword. On the positive side, the body's healing response can't occur without … [Read more...] about Waking Up to an Invisible Epidemic
