LeBron James Rejects Zlatan’s Criticism of Activist Athletes

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James responded to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s criticism of his political activism with a promise that he will never just shut up and dribble. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar also pointed out that Ibrahimovic clearly didn’t feel the same way about spotlighting social injustices when the soccer great called out racism in his native Sweden just three years ago. The AC Milan striker and former LA Galaxy star criticized James and other socially conscious athletes Thursday in an interview with Discovery Plus. Ibrahimovic called it “a mistake” for James and other athletes to get involved in political causes, saying they should “just do what you do best, because it doesn’t look good.” James responded forcefully to Ibrahimovic’s stance after the Lakers’ 102-93 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night. “I would never shut up about things that are wrong,” said James, who had 28 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. “I preach about my people and I … [Read more...] about LeBron James Rejects Zlatan’s Criticism of Activist Athletes

‘I Would Bet My House’: Kevin McCarthy Predicts GOP House Takeover In 2022

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said he’d “bet” his house that Republicans will take over the House of Representatives in 2022. The California congressman’s prediction came Saturday during an appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) with American Conservative Union Chair Matt Schlapp. “I would bet my house … my personal house. Don’t tell my wife, but I would bet it,” McCarthy told Schlapp. WATCH: #CPAC : House Minority Leader Rep. Win the House. This is the smallest majority the Democrats have had in 100 years. We could do it.” Though Republicans lost the presidency and control of the U.S. Senate during … [Read more...] about ‘I Would Bet My House’: Kevin McCarthy Predicts GOP House Takeover In 2022

Regulators Considered Extra Scrutiny Of Airplane Engine Before It Caught Fire Mid-Flight And Dropped Parts Over Colorado

Regulators had already considered mandating additional scrutiny on some Pratt & Whitney engines before one on a Boeing 777-200 fell apart mid-flight over the weekend. The preliminary investigation into the Hawaii-bound United Airlines flight, which conducted an emergency landing in Denver on Saturday, showed there was metal fatigue on one of the engine’s 22 fan blades, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators said late Monday night. The weakened blade is thought to have then interfered with and sliced a second blade. “A preliminary on-scene exam indicates damage consistent with metal fatigue,” NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said. (RELATED: Second Boeing Plane Fails Mid-Flight, Forcing Emergency Landing) Sumwalt added that Pratt & Whitney will examine the recovered blade at its factory on Tuesday alongside NTSB investigators. The safety agency’s ongoing investigation involves an examination of the engine, videos taken by passengers aboard and … [Read more...] about Regulators Considered Extra Scrutiny Of Airplane Engine Before It Caught Fire Mid-Flight And Dropped Parts Over Colorado

Russia Seeks to Strengthen Old Ties with Myanmar Junta

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA - Russia’s appetite for influence and lucrative arms sales in Southeast Asia has been whetted by the latest coup in Myanmar, where isolated generals remain distrustful of China but still require allies on the United Nations Security Council. Chinese investments had flourished in Myanmar under the now-deposed civilian government effectively led by former opposition figure Aung San Suu Kyi, and the military, also known as Tatmadaw, benefitted through state owned enterprises brought under its control before Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won historic 2015 elections. However, relations between junta leaders and Beijing have long been strained over Chinese interference across their common border – an existential threat not shared with Russia – and Beijing’s assistance to long-running ethnic insurgencies, including the sale of weapons to rebels. Bradley Murg, a senior research fellow at the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace, said Russia and … [Read more...] about Russia Seeks to Strengthen Old Ties with Myanmar Junta

Powerful Countries Come Under Fire at UN Human Rights Council

Cracks are emerging in the firewall that until now has protected some of the world’s powerful nations from being scrutinized and called to account for gross violations by the U.N. Human Rights Council. The executive director of Human Rights Watch, Kenneth Roth, called them the “untouchables.” “By that I mean governments that have managed to avoid any real critical scrutiny in the form of a resolution by the council.  And the foremost untouchables that I have in mind are China, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Russia,” he said. Addressing the untouchables, Roth said, is not only the biggest challenge facing the council, but is critical to its credibility.  He said efforts are underway to draft critical statements on Egypt and Saudi Arabia.  He added pressure is growing on Russia because of its alleged poisoning of opposition activist Alexey Navalny. However, of greatest interest, he says are emerging signs that China may no longer be untouchable. “It has been seen as politically … [Read more...] about Powerful Countries Come Under Fire at UN Human Rights Council
