Danny Willett hailed his BMW PGA Championship victory as a “fairytale” and revealed his overwhelming pride at battling back from the “dark places” he dropped to in recent years. Willett was tied for the lead with Jon Rahm going into the final day, but ended up winning by three shots courtesy of finishing on 20-under. With world No 6 Rahm shooting 70, the Spaniard finished second with Christiaan Bezuidenhout of South Africa in third. Englishman Willett - who won the Masters in 2016 - missed the cut at Wentworth a year ago but was in masterful form this time around. He produced a brilliant final-round performance to card a five-under-par 67 despite testing conditions. Willett clinched his seventh European Tour title and his first since winning in Dubai last year, with this also his first home triumph. And the 31-year-old revealed his delight having endured a nightmarish spell in the aftermath of his Augusta triumph. When the PGA Tour changed the tournament schedule last year, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, was in jeopardy of becoming an afterthought as some of the world’s best golfers would have likely decided to stay in the United States to finish the tour. But the PGA Tour’s changes moved the FedEx Cup playoffs from September to August, creating a hole for the BMW. So its organizers moved the tournament from a busy May to September, freeing more top players to attend the BMW. “It’s weird,” Francesco Molinari said last year after winning the European Tour’s second-most prestigious event. “I’ve always played this tournament in May. I think I’ve played it probably 12 or 13 times now, and always in May, so it will be a change. Hopefully, we’ll get even a stronger field than we did this year.” That is exactly what happened. Now scheduled for Thursday to Sunday, the field includes more high-profile … [Read more...] about A New Date Brings New Faces to the BMW PGA Championship
VIRGINIA WATER, ENGLAND—Danny Willett won a European Tour event on home soil for the first time in his career with a three-shot victory at the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday. The 31-year-old Englishman finished three strokes ahead of nearest challenger Jon Rahm in the final round. Willett shot a 5-under 67 to finish 20 under overall and collected his seventh European Tour title. He dropped only one shot Sunday on the par-4th 11th which could have been much worse. Rahm shared the overnight lead with Willett and finished second after a 2-under 70. South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout (68) was a shot further back. Rory McIlroy followed up his third-round 65 with a 67 to finish tied for ninth, his 16th top 10 in 21 events this season. After missing the cut at Wentworth last May, Willett was ranked 462nd as he struggled with a loss of form precipitated by a number of injuries. He will be just outside the top 30 when the rankings are updated on Monday. “It doesn’t … [Read more...] about Danny Willett wins BMW PGA Championship, confirming comeback
Rory McIlroy will be hoping for success at the BMW PGA Championship this week at the Wentworth Club in Surrey. The Northern Irishman last lifted the title in 2014, and finished as runner up last year to Francesco Molinari. McIlroy finished two strokes behind the Italian, and is hoping to go one better this year. After months of speculation, McIlroy re-joined the European Tour in May and confirmed that he would play in this week’s tournament. And he revealed to a pre-tournament press conference that he wants five more tournament wins before the end of the year. The former world number one also declared that he wants to take down Brooks Koepka at the top of the world rankings and return to golf’s summit. “I don't know if that's realistic, but it's definitely to get closer,” he said when asked if he can get back to the top. “I’ve got an opportunity over the next few weeks where there's a lot of World Ranking points in Japan and China and Dubai at the … [Read more...] about BMW PGA Championship prize money: How much can Rory McIlroy and co win at Wentworth?
The BMW PGA Championship got off to an exciting start yesterday with round two at Wentworth now underway. There was some bright sparks for home players with Matt Wallace leading the way after round one. Paul Casey had the chance to tie level with him but double bogeyed the 18th after chipping into the water from the green side bunker. That meant Jon Rahm and Henrik Stenson finished the day in joint second. However it was a day to forget for Rory McIlroy who shot a four over 76 as he looked to continue his run following the Fedex Cup victory. McIlroy was three under through five but had a horrible turn and finished with a seven and a six to leave him T114. What is the Cut at the BMW PGA Championship?
