Book World: NBC’s Katy Tur took abuse from Trump; it reminded her of her childhood
By Katy Tur Atria/One Signal. 272 pp. $28. - - - Katy Tur, an MSNBC anchor, gained prominence as a reporter during the 2016 presidential campaign, when Donald Trump plucked her from obscurity to taunt her at rallies as "little Katy," a "third-rate reporter," an exemplar of the media he despised. Tur withstood repeated abuse with remarkable aplomb, won a major journalism award and detailed her experience in a best-selling campaign memoir, "Unbelievable." Now, in a second memoir, "Rough Draft," Tur makes clear why she was especially well equipped for that bruising experience. She was raised in Los Angeles by parents who were pathbreaking journalists and prepared her for a thrilling life of chasing news. But Bob Tur - who came out as transgender in 2013 and became a woman, Zoey - was also a volatile, sometimes violent father who subjected their family to fits of rage and abuse. This is a case study in the blessings and curse of family legacy, a vivid account of how one … [Read more...] about Book World: NBC’s Katy Tur took abuse from Trump; it reminded her of her childhood
The Hidden Fees Making Your Bananas, And Everything Else, Cost More
2 Business The story you're about to read is bananas, and it's also about bananas. Pro Publica , News Partner Posted Replies By Michael Grabell, ProPublica June 17, 2022 Last fall, a company called One Banana loaded 600,000 pounds of the fruit from its plantations in Guatemala and Ecuador onto ships bound for the Port of Long Beach in California. Once they arrived, the bananas, packed in refrigerated containers, were offloaded by cranes for trucking to a nearby warehouse, where the fruit would be sent to supermarkets nationwide. But in the midst of a global supply chain crisis, none of the trucking companies the importer normally worked with were willing to come and get the containers. As the bananas sat at the marine terminal, a logistics specialist for One Banana scrambled, contacting more than a dozen trucking firms. With each passing hour, the bananas grew closer to spoiling. "We need to pull out 15 … [Read more...] about The Hidden Fees Making Your Bananas, And Everything Else, Cost More
U.S. Bishops Celebrate Overturn of Roe v. Wade as ‘Historic Day’
The United States Catholic bishops have registered their “joy” over the Supreme Court’s overturning of the ignominious 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that imposed legal abortion on 50 states. “This is a historic day in the life of our country, one that stirs our thoughts, emotions and prayers,” the leaders of the U.S. Bishops’ Conference (USCCB) said in a statement Friday. “For nearly fifty years, America has enforced an unjust law that has permitted some to decide whether others can live or die; this policy has resulted in the deaths of tens of millions of preborn children, generations that were denied the right to even be born.” The bishops’ statement, which comes in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization , is signed by Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez, USCCB president, and Baltimore Archbishop William Lori, chairman of the Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities. The truth that all men and women are created equal, with … [Read more...] about U.S. Bishops Celebrate Overturn of Roe v. Wade as ‘Historic Day’
These US companies will cover travel costs for employees who need an abortion
New York (CNN Business) After the Supreme Court ruled on Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade , corporate giants from a range of industries pledged to provide support and financial assistance for employees — and, in some cases, their dependents — seeking abortions in states that outlaw the procedure. The court's decision to roll back the nearly 50-year-old landmark ruling, which protected the federal, constitutional right to an abortion, is expected to transform the landscape of reproductive health in America, leaving abortion policy up to individual states and paving the way for numerous states to pass new abortion restrictions . As of Friday afternoon, state officials in at least seven states said that new abortion bans can now be enforced. Millions of people seeking abortions could soon be forced to travel across state lines to access the procedure, adding to the cost of an already often expensive healthcare service. For many, employers' benefit packages may be the only … [Read more...] about These US companies will cover travel costs for employees who need an abortion
Review: John Adams unleashes a demonic powerhouse with S.F. Symphony
Berkeley composer John Adams’ recent piano concerto “Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes?” gets under way in a fearless barrage and then never stops. It’s a nearly 30-minute powder keg of pounding keyboard harmonies, deliciously off-kilter rhythms and flat-out insolence. It sprints with a swagger. Three years after its world premiere with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, “Must the Devil” entered the San Francisco Symphony’s repertoire on Thursday, June 23, in a powerhouse performance led by Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen and featuring a stunning debut by the Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson. There were other wondrous offerings on the program in Davies Symphony Hall as well, by Sibelius and the late Steven Stucky. But it’s hard to focus on those, at least for the moment, because Adams’ extraordinary score demands attention. For starters, it’s rare to hear a piece of music crammed with so many notes. In the two outer movements, the solo piano part (originally written for the … [Read more...] about Review: John Adams unleashes a demonic powerhouse with S.F. Symphony
