The Monkeypox Virus May Be Exhibiting ‘Accelerated Evolution’
The monkeypox outbreak that health authorities first noticed in Europe back in May is getting worse. According to the World Health Organization’s latest report , there are over 2,100 confirmed cases, and at least one person has died. Now geneticists finally have enough data to begin getting a handle on how exactly the outbreak started—and where it might be heading. It’s not good news. Monkeypox, a viral disease that causes fever and a rash and can be fatal in a small percentage of cases, is endemic in Africa. And now it’s running amuck on every other permanently inhabited continent—and evolving quickly. While health officials have all the tools they need to contain it—primarily contact-tracing and vaccines—right now the virus is moving faster than we are, and adapting. The current strain of monkeypox may have been circulating, undetected, months before we finally diagnosed the first case outside Africa. And because there are so many more copies of the virus than we first … [Read more...] about The Monkeypox Virus May Be Exhibiting ‘Accelerated Evolution’
GA Abortion Law May Soon Be In Place As Kemp Hails ‘Historic Victory’
7 Politics & Government Gov. Brian Kemp says the Supreme Court's ruling in Roe vs. Wade is a "historic victory for life." Andrea V. Watson , Patch Staff Posted | Updated Replies GEORGIA — Gov. Brian Kemp said Friday that the Supreme Court's ruling to allow states to again outlaw abortion is a "historic victory for life." With the coronavirus that causes COVID, scientists are for the first time in history watching a virus evolve in real time. The CDC met Thursday to discuss whether to recommend Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for children between the ages of 6 to 17. And a growing number of health startups are offering “coaching” services to help patients battle chronic conditions. Latest updates: COVID vaccines saved 20 million lives in first year of pandemic, report says Nearly 20 million lives were saved by COVID-19 vaccines during their first year, but even more deaths could have been prevented if international targets for the shots had been reached, the Associated Press reports. Researchers at Imperial College London used data from 185 countries to estimate that vaccines prevented 4.2 million COVID-19 deaths in India, 1.9 million in the United States, 1 million in Brazil, 631,000 in France and 507,000 in … [Read more...] about COVID in California: Young children also vulnerable to long COVID, study finds
These US companies will cover travel costs for employees who need an abortion
New York (CNN Business) After the Supreme Court ruled on Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade , corporate giants from a range of industries pledged to provide support and financial assistance for employees — and, in some cases, their dependents — seeking abortions in states that outlaw the procedure. The court's decision to roll back the nearly 50-year-old landmark ruling, which protected the federal, constitutional right to an abortion, is expected to transform the landscape of reproductive health in America, leaving abortion policy up to individual states and paving the way for numerous states to pass new abortion restrictions . As of Friday afternoon, state officials in at least seven states said that new abortion bans can now be enforced. Millions of people seeking abortions could soon be forced to travel across state lines to access the procedure, adding to the cost of an already often expensive healthcare service. For many, employers' benefit packages may be the only … [Read more...] about These US companies will cover travel costs for employees who need an abortion
