A longstanding Santa Fe business has changed hands, this time to an expanding corporate player in the world of pest control.New Mexico Pest Control, with roots to 1945, was sold in February to Rentokil Steritech, based in Pennsylvania and one of the country’s largest pest control companies.Charles Simko Jr., who sold the company after owning it for 32 years, said Rentokil Steritech offered the best deal for New Mexico Pest Control’s 11 employees. He did not disclose the terms of the transaction.“They bought the company and all the employees are still retained,” Simko said. “They improved their fringe benefits quite significantly. 0 View Comments SMALL BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR The owner of a pest control company in Schaumburg, Illinois, is the national Small Business Person of the Year for 2018. The award to Rebecca Fyffe, owner of Landmark Pest Management, was announced Monday by Small Business Administration head Linda McMahon. Fyffe, who is also director of research for the company, took it over in 2001, and has increased its staff from 18 to 70 since then. Besides serving residential and business customers, it has developed new methods of pest control. McMahon described Fyffe as having used science and technology to innovate in her field. The company is expanding this year to Michigan, Indiana and Missouri. The Small Business Person of the Year is chosen from winners in all the states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Some small businesses in the U.S. are getting an influx in calls -- and in some cases, unexpected business -- due to fears about the Zika virus. The virus often produces either no symptoms or mild ones like fever in adults, but an outbreak in Brazil has been linked to a rare birth defect that causes a newborn's heads to be smaller and brain development issues. Outbreaks also have been reported in parts of Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the Americas. Pest control companies in Texas are getting a surge in business because of concerns that mosquitoes bearing the Zika virus will arrive from neighboring Mexico. The companies are already spraying homes, schools and other properties; usually they don't start until April. Darryl Nevins' Mosquito Joe franchise in Houston began getting an increase in calls last week after news reports of seven cases of Zika virus in the metropolitan area.
