Two groups of liberal-progressive Tories are pressuring Boris Johnson to “follow President Biden’s lead” and give all young people £500 in coronavirus recovery funds, which would cost the taxpayer an estimated £2.8 billion. Last month, the U.S. Congress passed the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus package, which contains the third round of $1,400 stimulus cheques. The One Nation Caucus and the Tory Reform Group have urged a similar “Covid relief payment” to young adults, calling them one of those “worse hit financially by the pandemic”. “The government should consider following President Biden’s lead and issue Covid relief payments for those worse [sic] affected by the pandemic. Wednesday on FNC’s “Fox & Friends,” Rep. Burgess Owens (R-UT) discussed his recent testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing entitled, “Jim Crow 2021: The Latest Assault on the Right to Vote.” The hearing was in response to Georgia’s new election law that many deemed racist because of the requirement to show identification to vote. Burgess told “Fox & Friends” that it is an “insult” to suggest black people would not have ID. A man was killed at 4 a.m. on April 18. It happened in the 1100 block of I-35. In the weeks after George Floyd’s murder, protesters in Denver demanded the prosecution and conviction of the Minneapolis officer responsible for his death as well as the prosecution of officers who kill people in Colorado. On Tuesday, a Minnesota jury found the Minneapolis police officer guilty of murdering Floyd — a result Colorado leaders said was a small step toward improving police accountability . But criminal charges against Colorado law enforcement officers who kill people while on-duty remain rare and convictions are even rarer. There is no official historical database of officers who have been charged or convicted of on-duty killings, but a review of Denver Post archives from the past 10 years found at least five cases where officers were charged. COVID-19 and our nation’s response to it magnifies a sad truth: We have ignored our fellow citizens with severe mental illness. When we ignore those citizens, we’re leaving behind people with many more barriers to vaccination than the average person. Studies show those living with serious mental illness experience a lack of knowledge and awareness about immunization, a lack of accessibility, a cost barrier, fears about immunization and often no recommendation to receive an immunization from a primary care provider. Only 25 percent of adults with severe mental illness receive the annual flu vaccine, compared to almost 50 percent of adults in the general population. Without a strategically designed vaccination program able to bring the vaccine to people with serious mental illness, potentially preventable deaths will occur from COVID-19.
