Sen. Tim Scott said he would be "disappointed" if President Trump pardons Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman accused of tax fraud, bank fraud conspiracy and other charges. The South Carolina Republican, appearing on CBS News' "Face the Nation" along with fellow South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy, has already said Mr. Trump should not pardon former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about foreign contacts. The same, Scott said, goes for Manafort. Legal sources with knowledge of Manafort's strategy have told CBS News' Paula Reid that Manafort is now betting his future on a presidential pardon. According to those sources, Manafort is not planning to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller, and intends to fight the charges through to trial. Transcript: Sen. Tim Scott, Rep. Trey Gowdy on "Face the Nation," April 1, 2018 "I do not," Scott said, asked by "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan … [Read more...] about Sen. U.S. Donald Trump Michael Flynn Paul Manafort Russia investigation President Donald Trump could pardon figures at the center of the Russia investigation via Twitter and the Department of Justice would have very little say in the matter other than to carry out his orders—according to internal department emails. The stunning emails show officials at the Office of the Pardon Attorney last July discussing news articles about Trump’s pardoning powers via Twitter. The documents were obtained by CNN from the Government Accountability Project, a whistleblower nonprofit, after it received them from a Freedom of Information Act request. On Wednesday The New York Times revealed that, also in July, Trump’s former top lawyer in the Russia investigation John Dowd was discussing potential pardons with lawyers for Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort. Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Michael Flynn reacts at a campaign event for then Republican presidential … [Read more...] about Trump Could Issue Pardon For Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort Via Twitter
Harry Litman practices law at the firm Constantine Cannon and teaches constitutional law at the University of California at San Diego. He served as deputy assistant attorney general in the Justice Department from 1993 to 1998 and U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania from 1998 to 2001. The most enduring mystery to date in special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s inquiry has been former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort’s obdurate refusal to cooperate with the investigation. Manafort has a reputation as a swashbuckling gambler, but he has been playing odds in the biggest game of his life that are not just long but prohibitive. A new report that the president’s now-former lawyer once discussed pardoning Manafort may finally explain why the latter has kept quiet — even though that bet is still incredibly risky. Manafort’s refusal to cooperate can’t be driven by a rational calculation that he has any reasonable chance of escaping … [Read more...] about We may know why Paul Manafort has kept quiet. But his bet is still risky.
President Trump’s personal lawyer discussed pardons with attorneys for Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort last year, according to a report Wednesday. The potential prospect of pardons came from John Dowd as special counsel Robert Mueller was zeroing in on indictments against the pair, The New York Times reported. Dowd, who stepped away from Trump’s legal team last week, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but denied to The Times that he had such discussions with lawyers representing either of the President’s former advisers. “There were no discussions. Period,” Dowd said. “As far as I know, no discussions.” Flynn, Trump’s short-lived national security adviser, pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents last fall and agreed to cooperate with investigators. Trump has repeatedly dismissed the federal probe into Russian election meddling as a ”witch hunt” and has insisted that Flynn was railroaded by the FBI. … [Read more...] about President Trump’s lawyer talked pardons for Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort, report says
U.S. Donald Trump Russia investigation Robert Mueller rick gates Paul Manafort Alex Van Der Zwaan In a court filing Tuesday night special counsel Robert Mueller alleges Rick Gates, a close associate of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, knew the two were working with a former Russian intelligence officer during the 2016 election. The FBI has determined the former officer continued to have ties to Russian intelligence in 2016 and worked with Gates and Manafort in September and October that year. It is not clear whether the two men knew this. Mueller’s team made the revelation in a sentencing document against lawyer Alex van der Zwaan, who pleaded guilty in February to lying to investigators in the Russia probe. The investigation is examining whether the Trump campaign assisted the Kremlin’s interference in the 2016 election.
