Republican lawmakers introduced an amendment Thursday that would apply the Hyde Amendment to the $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill. “Unfortunately, House Democrats did not include Hyde Protections in the $1.9 trillion reconciliation bill,” Republicans Reps. Jackie Walorski, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, and Virginia Foxx said in a statement. Lawmakers have previously quarreled over COVID funds going to abortion groups. In May, Republicans accused Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of removing protections in her $3 trillion coronavirus bill preventing cash flow to Planned Parenthood. Republican lawmakers introduced an amendment Thursday that would apply the Hyde Amendment to the $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill. The amendment to the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 prohibits the gigantic relief bill from using any federal funds for abortions. The bill is more than twice as large as the stimulus plan produced during the Great Recession and almost half the cost of the United … [Read more...] about Democrats Removed Pro-Life Protections From Massive COVID Bill, GOP Lawmakers Say

Fortunately, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Speaker of the House Chris Sprowls have stepped forward to address this – what I believe is one of our most pressing problems. This week, with their encouragement, I introduced a ground-breaking Consumer Data Privacy bill in the Florida House of Representatives that will put the ownership of personal data back into the hands of individual Floridians, while at the same time allowing big tech and businesses to access our information – as long as we give them permission. US Forces Focus on IS, Not on Protecting Syrian Oil Fields, Pentagon Says
WASHINGTON - U.S. forces in Syria are focused on fighting the remnants of the Islamic State group and are not guarding oil fields as previously ordered by former President Donald Trump, a U.S. defense official said Monday. Since a U.S. firm contracted last year with the Kurds in northern Syria to help exploit northeastern Syria oil reserves, U.S. troops are not involved, said Pentagon spokesman John Kirby. The 900 U.S. military personnel and contractors in the region "are not authorized to provide assistance to any other private company, including its employees or agents, seeking to develop oil resources in Syria," Kirby said. "It's important to remember that our mission there remains to enable the enduring defeat of ISIS," he said, referring to the Islamic State. … [Read more...] about US Forces Focus on IS, Not on Protecting Syrian Oil Fields, Pentagon Says

The Memo: CPAC fires starting gun on 2024
Auditions for the 2024 Republican nomination have begun — and several big names are trying out for the role of the future Donald Trump. There’s one problem, however. The former president may not be ready to cede the stage to an understudy. Trump will give the keynote speech Sunday afternoon at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), which this year is being held in Orlando, Fla. The conference began in earnest on Friday. ADVERTISEMENT Trump’s speech will be his most high-profile public engagement since leaving office after having been impeached for a second time following the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. He is widely expected to win a straw poll conducted among CPAC attendees earlier Sunday. Trump has said nothing definite about running again. But even his detractors acknowledge he would be the strong favorite for the GOP nomination — even as those skeptics are also adamant he would lose a general election. “Trump will be the nominee if he decides … [Read more...] about The Memo: CPAC fires starting gun on 2024
