More than a year since its beginning, the true origin of the COVID-19 pandemic is still unknown, but investigations into the matter have uncovered new questions about a scientific practice known as “gain-of-function” research. Most of the scientific community still contends that the novel coronavirus wreaking havoc on the world is of natural origin . Others argue gain-of-function (GoF) research may have potentially played a role, though, and critics have warned for years the field was dangerous enough to cause a pandemic. The simplest explanation of GoF research is that it is the process of taking a disease and making it more dangerous for some kind of scientific benefit. It can take a variety of forms, but the desired outcome is typically to make a disease more contagious, more deadly or both. Carlson: ‘We Are Moving Toward Some Kind of Larger Confrontation with Russia — Why Are We Doing That?’
Nearly a year after a New York Times report surfaced alleging the Russian government offered bounties on U.S. troops in Afghanistan, the Biden administration revealed the intelligence community had “low to moderate” confidence in the report. Friday, FNC’s Tucker Carlson reacted to that recent revelation in Russia bounty story and warned the heated rhetoric regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin could be a sign of a coming conflict with Russia. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: For five full years, through his campaign for President into his term in the White House, Donald Trump said often that he wanted American troops to leave Afghanistan. Finally, in his last months in office, Trump seemed ready to act on this. He told aides he was going to pull the troops out. Then on June 26 of last year The New York Times stopped him from doing that. The Times writing a story saying that the American Intel Community had quote, “Concluded that a Russian military intelligence unit … [Read more...] about Carlson: ‘We Are Moving Toward Some Kind of Larger Confrontation with Russia — Why Are We Doing That?’
Matthew McConaughey: How actor’s wife ‘injected’ soccer into his blood
(CNN) Before he became one of Hollywood's leading men, before the Oscar for best actor in 2014 and he went Interstellar on the silver screen, Matthew McConaughey was learning his craft and, in fact, preparing to shoot his very first scene. The 51-year-old McConaughey is now a co-owner of Austin FC -- Major League Soccer's newest franchise -- and ahead of the new season, Austin supporters are chanting those words to the tune of "Olé, olé, olé!" Speaking exclusively to CNN Sport , McConaughey marveled at the trajectory of those three little words. "If you said that night, 'That line you just threw out of your mouth, someone's going to be … [Read more...] about Matthew McConaughey: How actor’s wife ‘injected’ soccer into his blood

A conservative sides with ‘Amtrak Joe’ on train travel
Back in the day, it felt as if I lived on airplanes, especially during my time at the Pentagon. Unfortunately, those collective hundreds of hours may have contributed to pressure-related issues in my ears. After experiencing hearing loss and severe balance issues, which led to multiple visits to specialists along the East Coast, it was determined that I should avoid flying to be on the safe side. That advice taken — especially after temporarily losing my hearing again by simply going up to the 60th floor of a New York City skyscraper — I have not boarded an airplane in 15 years. Because of that, those who knew I loved to travel thought I would be miserable. But it’s just the opposite. I rediscovered the joy, camaraderie and mental relaxation of train travel, here in the United States and across Europe. ADVERTISEMENT In the late 1980s when I worked in the White House, I took Amtrak often between Washington and New York City, a route that makes a stop in Wilmington, Del. … [Read more...] about A conservative sides with ‘Amtrak Joe’ on train travel
