The Golden Gate Bridge is a big step closer to getting a suicide barrier after bridge officials approved a $76 million funding package for a net system that would prevent people from jumping to their deaths. The bridge district's board of directors voted unanimously on Friday, June 27, 2014, in favor of the funding package, which includes $20 million in bridge toll revenue. I thought we would take a fun detour from the usual details-oriented Super Bowl material or the Q-and-A exchanges with important people connected to next February’s game. How about if we talk some optics instead? It’s a thing, you know. Even though “optics” is technically plural. Optics will be a thing at the Super Bowl in February, for sure. A "friend for life" has been campaigning for years, along with others, to make a California landmark safer. John Blackstone has her story: On a stage in Nashville, songwriter Sarah Lockwood Barr performs songs she's written that she loves to sing ... and one that breaks her heart. "This is for Casey Brooks, who would have turned 27 this past May," she announced, before playing "Starting Over": All the world's gone to sleep tonight. She and Casey grew up, she says, in a comfortable California town just north of San Francisco. "We learned to ride bikes together," Lockwood Barr said. Senior year of high school was almost over, and they were ready to go off to college. But shortly before graduating, in January 2008, "Casey jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge and ended her life," Lockwood Barr said. "And you had no idea?" Blackstone asked. "Nobody did. She was already accepted into college. She was a really talented writer. She had a good crew of friends. There was no reason, … [Read more...] about The Golden Gate Bridge to get a suicide net

Yet, remarkably, there are plenty of different ways to directly and indirectly ponder the Art Deco beauty - arguably the most recognizable bridge on the planet - that has linked San Francisco with Marin County for more than 76 years. 1.
