Letter to the editor: Issue-oriented, hardworking Cote well prepared to lead Maine

June 2, 2018 pressherald Leave a Comment

I first met Adam Cote many years ago, while I was teaching at Sanford High School. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, teachers were asked to monitor student hall passes. Upon seeing a student meandering down the hall, I used my authoritative voice and asked to see his hall pass. Adam (who wasn’t in any of my classes) quickly complied: no eye rolling, no shoulder wing dips, just a “Yes, sir. No problem, sir.” His demeanor and attitude must have been influenced by his father (Roland Cote) who was on the faculty. At the time I thought to myself that this student might have a career in the military. An art exhibit that is bringing a message of hope to Salem traveled a long way to get there.“Sanctuary: Art of Displaced LGBTQ Refugees” represents work by eight artists who currently live in Austria, after fleeing persecution in their native countries of Iran, Tajikistan and Syria, where homosexuality is officially condemned. But their creations have found a warm welcome at the North Shore Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth in Witch City Mall, formerly the Museum Place Mall, where a reception will be held tonight. “My take on this is, throughout having to leave your country with fear and violence, throughout all the persecution and threats, they have found a way to bring beauty into the world,” said Steve Harrington, director of nAGLY. “They found something that soothes their souls and makes them feel worthwhile, and we’re honored that we can showcase their work.”NAGLY has occupied 5,000 square feet in … [Read more...] about Freedom of expression

CSU art student Saxon Martinez utilizes sculptures to express experiences with racism

April 24, 2018 collegian Leave a Comment

A Colorado State University student is taking the idea of artistic expression to a new level.  After eight years as a U.S. Marine, Saxon Martinez came to CSU to pursue biomedical science. Now, he’s a student in the art and art history departments, and he is known for creating installations depicting what he goes through as a minoritized person. Martinez said he transitioned well into CSU because of the responsibilities he had in the military, where he learned to stay focused mentally and physically in even the direst of situations.  “If you want to be successful, you need to put in the effort,” Martinez said. “That mindset transferred here. I know I have a job to do, and I’m seeking out ways to make myself more successful as an artist.” Martinez is currently working towards being an installation artist. Martinez will build various sculptures between eight and 12 feet tall, expressing an idea or an event that is personally related to him and … [Read more...] about CSU art student Saxon Martinez utilizes sculptures to express experiences with racism

Lindenhurst trustees to vote on transit-oriented housing project

April 22, 2018 newsday Leave a Comment

The Lindenhurst Village Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting Tuesday to vote on a proposed apartment complex that would be the biggest such development in the village. Tritec Real Estate of East Setauket has proposed building a 260-unit multifamily rental complex across from the Long Island Rail Road station in Lindenhurst, on East Hoffman Avenue between South Smith Street and South Pennsylvania Avenue. The village board must vote to approve rezoning the 7 acres from industrial and residential to Downtown Redevelopment District. The latter zoning was created by the village last year. The Lindenhurst Residences proposal calls for 11 studios, 142 one-bedrooms, 15 one-bedrooms with dens, five one-bedrooms with lofts, 75 two-bedrooms and 12 three-bedrooms. The units would be within a 317,478-gross-square-foot building reaching a maximum 53 feet high. There would be 339 parking spaces on site, as well as 40 spots to be landbanked. Village officials said the complex could provide … [Read more...] about Lindenhurst trustees to vote on transit-oriented housing project
