View more opinion on CNN. London (CNN) When I first heard back in February that the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) was considering banning Russian and Belarusian players from Wimbledon following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, I was surprised. After all, most other major leagues have allowed individual Russian athletes to continue to work in their respective sports -- whether it's the NHL in the US and Canada, European football leagues or the World Tennis Tour. Patrick McEnroe I have gone back and forth on whether the AELTC made the right decision. But after plenty of conversations with people at both ends of this political -- because it is political -- argument, I have reached a conclusion. The club made the wrong call. Wimbledon 2022: Serena Williams returns to grand slam action as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic headline men’s draw
(CNN) With the dust hardly settled from the clay-court season, the gaze of the tennis world has already turned to Wimbledon for the third grand slam of the year. The tournament, which gets underway on Monday, was wrapped in controversy weeks before a ball was due to be hit at SW19 with organizers banning Russian and Belarusian players amid the war in Ukraine. That decision led the ATP and WTA Tours, the governing bodies of men's and women's tennis, to strip this year's Wimbledon of ranking points , but that hasn't deterred the world's best players from taking part. Indeed, Serena Williams is scheduled to make a return to grand slam tennis after a year-long absence from the sport. This week, she has been competing in the women's doubles event at Eastbourne alongside Ons Jabeur, although the pair had to withdraw from the tournament semifinals after Jabeur picked up a knee injury. With so little match experience, it's difficult to predict how … [Read more...] about Wimbledon 2022: Serena Williams returns to grand slam action as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic headline men’s draw
A short distance from Wimbledon, players struggle and strive to qualify for the main draw
Roehampton, London (CNN) It's unmistakably a scene from the British summer: across a stretch of green, well-kept courts, tennis players shoot balls over the net as spectators -- some seated, some sprawled on grass banks -- watch on in the lazy afternoon heat. This is Wimbledon -- the third grand slam tournament of the calendar year -- but the venue and the competitors are not quite as most know it. At this tennis club, the crowds are smaller, the cheers quieter, and the courts packed closer together than at the All England Club three miles away. While the Wimbledon main draw may not get underway until next week, for more than 250 players the journey to get there has already begun. The four-day qualification tournament in the London district of Roehampton can be a golden ticket for the Wimbledon main stage -- a place at which some players have dreamed of competing their whole careers. "I haven't actually been to the main set at Wimbledon since my … [Read more...] about A short distance from Wimbledon, players struggle and strive to qualify for the main draw
Russian and Belarusian players barred from competing at Wimbledon tennis tournament
(CNN) Wimbledon organizers announced on Wednesday that Russian and Belarusian players will not be allowed to compete at this year's grand slam following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "Given the profile of The Championships in the United Kingdom and around the world, it is our responsibility to play our part in the widespread efforts of Government, industry, sporting and creative institutions to limit Russia's global influence through the strongest means possible," the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) said in a statement. "In the circumstances of such unjustified and unprecedented military aggression, it would be unacceptable for the Russian regime to derive any benefits from the involvement of Russian or Belarusian players with The Championships. "It is therefore our intention, with deep regret, to decline entries from Russian and Belarusian players to The Championships 2022," it added. The Kremlin said earlier on Wednesday that a ban on … [Read more...] about Russian and Belarusian players barred from competing at Wimbledon tennis tournament
