Oregon unemployment claims spiked as shutdown began
Unemployment claims by federal workers in Oregon increased fourfold after the government shutdown began last month, according to data from the Oregon Employment Department.Between Dec. 21 -- the last day before the shutdown started -- and Jan. 10, some 1,900 Oregon workers filed unemployment claims. That compares with 450 in the same period a year earlier. The shutdown affects about 9,600 federal workers in Oregon, according to the employment department. But only some of those are eligible for unemployment benefits. Some federal employees whose work is deemed essential must keep working during the shutdown, even though they’re not getting paid. Those workers aren’t eligible for jobless benefits because the legal definition of unemployment excludes people working full time, whether or not they are being paid.Oregon has 28,000 federal employees altogether, most of whom work for funded agencies like the Postal Service unaffected by the shutdown. The late-year shutdown … [Read more...] about Oregon unemployment claims spiked as shutdown began
Federal Employees Are Filing Unemployment Claims To Get Through The Shutdown
POLITICS 01/10/2019 10:00 am ET The benefits can serve as a lifeline as workers start to miss paychecks. By Dave Jamieson Elaine Evans would normally be getting a paycheck deposited in her bank account this week. Instead, the furloughed federal employee will be looking in her mailbox for an unemployment insurance check. “I should get it this week, hopefully in the next day or so,” said Evans, who lives in Oregon and works for one of the government’s natural resource agencies. Many federal workers like Evans are about to mark their first expected payday without wages since the partial government shutdown began Dec. 22. As they go longer without pay, more and more are expected to take the step Evans was quick to: file an unemployment claim with their state in order to find a lifeline until the government fully reopens and their pay resumes. Roughly a quarter of government functions are unfunded as President Donald Trump demands Congress approve more … [Read more...] about Federal Employees Are Filing Unemployment Claims To Get Through The Shutdown
Federal government shutdown threatens about 9,600 Oregon employees
Whitney Woodworth Salem Statesman Journal Published 11:00 AM EST Dec 29, 2018 The jobs of about 9,600 Oregonians are in limbo as the partial federal government shutdown, now in its seventh day, brought furloughs, closures and days working without the guarantee of a paycheck. According to the Oregon Employment Department, 9,583 workers are employed at federal agencies that are not currently funded and are affected by the partial federal shutdown. "Some of these workers have already been furloughed," OED state employment economist Nick Beleiciks said Friday. "Some agencies are operating through today." Other agencies, like the U.S. District Courts, have enough funding to cover operations costs for a few more weeks. Bad bugs: Invasive insects on Christmas trees could threaten Oregon forests Essential personnel are still working, even though funding for their paychecks has not been appropriated, Beleiciks said. Locally, the shutdown … [Read more...] about Federal government shutdown threatens about 9,600 Oregon employees
Brett Kavanaugh accuser Julie Swetnick faced misconduct allegations at Oregon company
Julie Swetnick, one of the women accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, faced allegations of her own misconduct during a short stint at a Portland tech company 18 years ago. Swetnick, 55, became the third woman in recent weeks to raise allegations against Kavanaugh. She issued a statement Wednesday in which she claimed she'd observed Kavanaugh at alcohol-fueled parties where women were mistreated. Her attorney is Michael Avenatti, a fierce critic of President Donald Trump who is reportedly considering a presidential run in 2020. Avenatti also represents Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress who claims to have had an affair with Trump before he took office. The lawsuit was dismissed shortly after it was filed late in 2000, court documents show. In emails to The Oregonian/OregonLive, Avenatti called the allegations against his client, "Completely bogus." "This lawsuit never had any merit as evidenced by how quickly it was dismissed," Avenatti wrote. "It was … [Read more...] about Brett Kavanaugh accuser Julie Swetnick faced misconduct allegations at Oregon company
