A historic hardware store in Purcellville, Va., is at the center of a community controversy over allegations that one of its employees used an anti-gay slur after refusing to help a Boy Scout asking for donations for a service project. The alleged incident happened Friday afternoon at Nichols Hardware, a family-owned store that was founded more than 100 years ago and is a “trip back in time,” according to a Loudoun County history organization. After the boy and his father were turned away, Carlyn Hamilton, who was finishing up her purchase, said the employee turned to her and said, “You know they let homos in, right?” He was referring to the Boy Scouts. “And he said, ‘We do not support homos around here, I can tell you that,’ ” Hamilton said Sunday. When contacted Sunday by The Washington Post, a manager at Nichols who would identify himself only as Glenn called the allegation “hearsay.” He said … [Read more...] about A historic hardware store. The Boy Scouts of America are about to remove "Boy" from the organization's flagship Boy Scouts program, and not everyone is OK with the extraction. And not everyone is OK with who isn't OK with the extraction.BSA announced Wednesday it's cutting that gender-specific part of the group's moniker in its attempt to become a scouting choice for both boys and girls. As of next February, the Boy Scouts, which includes kids from 10 to 17, will become Scouts BSA. "As we enter a new era for our organization, it is important that all youth can see themselves in Scouting in every way possible," Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh said in a statement while touting the program's new marketing campaign to promote inclusiveness, "Scout Me In."The parent organization, Boy Scouts of America or BSA, will not see a name change, and neither will the gender-neutral name for the Cub Scouts, a program for kids 7-10 years old.Last year, BSA announced it would start providing programs for girls and before that … [Read more...] about ‘National disgrace’: Boy Scouts under fire for removing ‘Boy’ from name
Some Southern Baptists are not laughing. A Kentucky pastor may soon be out of a job after his wife wrote a satirical column that was critical of the Southern Baptist Convention’s attack on the Boy Scouts of America for its decision to allow gay members. Bill Thomas is an associate pastor and the minister of music at Kentucky’s First Baptist Church of Madisonville, but that didn’t stop his wife, Angela, from unleashing a scathing critique of the SBC in her column for the The Messenger of Madisonville. “Some might assume that because the Boy Scouts have addressed the issue, it must mean that Scout packs are filled with 10-year-old boys insisting on wearing their Scout caps at a rakish tilt and over-accessorizing their uniforms,” Thomas wrote. “Sexuality doesn’t come up and isn’t relative to typical Scouting activities but now, thanks to Southern Baptists, the parents of little innocent Scouts everywhere are having to have The Talk. … [Read more...] about Pastor may lose job after wife pens column bashing Southern Baptist Convention for stance on Boy Scouts
It was a gay (and lesbian) old time at the 24th annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards, where Madonna called for revolution, and NFL players, newscasters, “Jersey Shore” stars and Honey Boo Boo joined in the chant for civil rights. Dressed in a faux Cub Scouts uniform bearing the number 13, Madonna stole the show in an 11-minute speech before urging the Boy Scouts of America “to change their stupid rules” of banning gay members. She compared discrimination against homosexuals to white supremacists lynching black people in the Deep South and said, “I don’t know about you, but I can’t take this s— anymore. That’s why I want to start a revolution. Are you with me? It’s 2013. We live in America — the land of the free and home of the brave? That’s a question, not a statement.” After being introduced by Madonna, Anderson Cooper took the stage to receive the Vito Russo … [Read more...] about Madonna is GLAAD to honor Anderson Cooper and calls out the Boy Scouts to end gay ban
The American presidency is a peculiar institution. Its occupant is supposed to be simultaneously head of government and head of state, performing the functions that in most other countries are separated between a prime minister and a monarch or ceremonial president. As head of government, the president can, and sometimes must, be nakedly partisan. But as head of state he is supposed to rise above the muck of politics, serving as a symbol of unity to bring Americans of all political persuasions together. That is something Ronald Reagan did after the Challenger disaster, Bill Clinton did after the Oklahoma City bombing, George W. Bush did after 9/11, and Barack Obama did after the Charleston church shooting. Perhaps Donald Trump will rise to the occasion after, God forbid, some future tragedy. But so far it’s safe to say that while he doesn’t know how to be an effective president in general, he is especially bad at the ceremonial, non-partisan part of the job. He is … [Read more...] about Trump is unteachable. His Boy Scouts speech proved it.
George Takei will be in uniform on Sunday, but it won’t be to board the USS Enterprise. The iconic actor, best known as Lt. Hikaru Sulu on “Star Trek,” will be joined in the official Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation car by Ohio mom and former Boy Scout leader Jennifer Tyrrell at the 43rd Annual LGBT Pride March in New York City. The pair, who will each be accompanied by their respective spouses, will sport matching Boy Scout uniforms to protest Tyrrell’s ouster as a Scout leader for being gay. “I was a Boy Scout, and I have wonderful memories of my Boy Scout days and we had no issues like what has come up in recent times,” says the openly gay Takei. “I’m saddened and shocked by the policy the Boy Scouts have.” Tyrrell was a leader for her 7-year-old son’s Boy Scout troop in Bridgeport, Ohio, until April when the organization asked her to step down, noting that her sexual orientation “did not meet … [Read more...] about George Takei outraged at Boy Scouts for dropping gay mom as a leader
FREEHOLD – Gov. Chris Christie made few waves, or broke little new ground, at his town-hall meeting Tuesday at the National Guard armory. He took 11 questions in all, none of them edgy. One person jokingly called him 'President Christie,' to laughter and applause. Another said he supports Christie's pursuit of more pension reforms but thought the governor could better explain to the public why a system from the 1960s can't work as people live longer. Another criticized the responsiveness of the state's division that serves people with developmental disabilities.Christie didn't call on audience member Jim Keady, with whom he had a famous confrontation last October in Belmar, but he didn't get through the day without a Superstorm Sandy question.Late in the program, Christie called on a Boy Scout in full uniform, Zachary Seemar, age 12 and a member of Troop 33 in Brick. Christie said he did so because the boy thought he'd been called on minutes earlier."I can't say no to the Boy … [Read more...] about Boy Scout from Brick presses Christie on Sandy recovery
Much of the media was shocked and horrified by President Trump’s Boy Scout Jamboree speech on Monday. Many commentators are talking as if Trump’s raucous, free-wheeling spiel exposed underage children to political pornography. Instead of railing against Hillary Clinton and boasting of his victory in last year’s election, Trump supposedly should have delivered the usual “our wonderful political system” speech. Some people will never forgive Trump for telling Scouts thatWashington is a “sewer.” Actually, that message could be an antidote to much of what Scouts hear. Trump’s speech, insofar as it spurs doubts about political authority, could be far more salutary than prior presidential Jamboree speeches. When I attended the 1969 Scout Jamboree in Idaho, President Richard Nixon sent us a message praising our idealism. But the type of idealism that Nixon and the Scouts often glorified was more likely to produce servility than liberty. … [Read more...] about Trump’s Boy Scout speech may have set kids on the right path
Were all the merit badges for naught? For Brian Peffly, a life teaching eager Boy Scouts to tie knots, start fires and build their character ended with a phone call. The vague communique told him that the Boy Scouts of America didn’t want a gay man in their midst. “I didn’t learn that discrimination was a scouting value when I was growing up,” said Peffly, 35, who has been both scout and scout leader for the better part of 20 years. “Being told I can’t be a part of my family is very devastating,” Peffly said of Troop 192, the Westerville, Ohio, group with which he has been active for much of his life. Two years after the storied organization amended its standards to prevent the expulsion of any youth member on the basis of his sexual orientation, openly gay adult members and volunteers are still in a bind. The organization made an explicit distinction between youth and adults, and leaders from the Boy Scouts of America have said … [Read more...] about Scouting values: Leaders call on Boy Scouts of America to end ban on openly gay adults
